The Master Cutler Challenge

The Master Cutler Challenge

Hello Community Site Blog readers! A bit of different news to report as we received a really nice thank-you letter from both Mr. Andrew Coombe, Chairman of the Sheffield-based St. Luke's Hospice and Mr. Gordon W. Bridge, The Master Cutler. Their letters thanked us for participating in this year's Master Cutler Challenge - a charity event which helped raise £200,000 for St. Luke's and Rotherham Hospices.
What is The Master Cutler Challenge? It started like this.... An initial £5,000 was donated by 3i to kick start this project. One hundred Sheffield-area organisations volunteered to participate in the Master Cutler Challenge. Each team was given £50 and six months to grow it by as much as was legally and ethically possible, all in a good cause and Plusnet chose St. Luke's Hospice as our charity. The 6 month long challenge ran between March and August this year. Plusnet saw the Master Cutler Challenge as an ideal opportunity to build on the team spirit within the Business whilst at the same time raising money for St. Luke's Hospice patient's and families whose lives have been affected by an incurable illness. During that period between March and August the Plusnet team, made up from a core team of about 10 people from all parts of the Business, organised various fund-raising events. We held two Bake Sales, had a Crazy Hat Day, ran the Grand National, held our own Play Your Cards Right competition, and with the cooperation of the Stagecoach Tram Company, sponsored a Tram-a-thon Event in June. We had two teams who rode the Yellow and Blue lines, and with collection buckets in hand raised money for St. Luke's Hospice along each tram stop on both routes. It was a fantastic day and even the weather held out (well, at least until the very end). We really enjoyed the experience and the chance to meet and compete with some of the best companies in Sheffield!

0 Thanks

Not having been into Sheffield - or associated with the cutlery business - I always associate the name "Master Cutler" with the train on the Midland Railway :-) Is there any cutlery business at all now in Sheffield ?

The Master Cutler is the head of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire established in 1624. His role is to act as an ambassador of industry in Sheffield, England. He is elected by the freemen of the company on the first Monday of September of each year and the position taken in the first Tuesday of October. Despite the title the Master Cutler does not have to be involved in the cutlery business, or even the steel industry, to be elected. I took this from wikipedia...wanted to get my facts straight. We're still in the silver-smith business in Sheffield! Thanks for your comments! MMJ
