Router advice for an idiot

Okay, so when fibre broadband came in the engineer fitted a white BT box and gave us a simple Plusnet router to plug into it.
I soon swapped that out for an Asus router which has been great but now I want to change to a combined unit and use the Asus as a wifi extender on my daughters nertwork as the Plusnet provided router there is woeful on wifi.

Thing is I'm getting confused. Do I need something with a modem built in? Is it just a router. If so does that have to be VDSL?

Any advice and recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi @lol999

The simple answer is Yes and Yes.

If you are thinking of sticking with ASUS, whatever you do do you buy an ASUS DSL-86U.

The DSL-86U has a terrible Mediatek modem device.

The ASUS DSL-88U is reported to be OK as it uses an Broadcom modem device.

Regards

Richard

@RichardB  I think you missed a "don't" as in don't buy that Asus model.

Yes a bad typo on my part.

Do not buy an ASUS DSL-68U

No i won't be buying either of those as I can't afford them. Ideally I'd like to keep it below £70!

Re: Router advice for an idiot

If you have recently or about to update your PN contract, you could do worse than ask for a new router, at worst £6.99 postage. Just make sure you get it updated to the latest firmware.

If not, then many people get hold of a BT HH6 and just insert the PN username and password - eBay/Free ads and so on usually have some available cheaply.

Much will depend on what you want from the router?
