Re: Dns seems high

Unfortunately the downside of using a load balancer to hand out requests vs. anycast and a massively shared cache on the backend (i'm looking at you google)...
...To make more wide-ranging changes will unfortunately have to wait until major scaling at which point a lot of things will be addressed, so please bear with us.
In the meantime, if this exact same config is deployed across the rest of the cachedns estate then performance will be much improved.

And again, as an aside - i'm pretty bored of having posts moderated for merely answering questions now when other forum users don't get the same treatment. Just an observation mods.

Would a single cache be that much bigger?
I would have thought the vast majority of entries would be the same in all 10 caches.
Do you have any data to clarify this?
Sorry Chris but I'm not seeing anything at this end to say the new resolver is a step forward.

Well, there is only 1 way to find out if it will be a success i guess. I'm also adding a view from the south below, taken @22:45 ish.

Also from down south at 23:45, and the same four DNSes at the bottom of the chart  Cry

Linux, Fedora 20, the clue is in:

(RedHat / Fedora, fc20 = Fedora 20)
Here are some more:
http://ejs1920.users.sourceforge.net/more-dig+adflag.pcap
They aren't all 0x80, that capture was mainly me trying to spot any patterns with what causes the responses to be marked 0x20 - it seems to depend on which server (9 and 10 vs. 49 and 50) and what hostname you look up.

This should be fixed now and in titanium.

Re: Dns seems high

I assume the problem in those numbers is the retries.
One current problematic hostname for the PN DNS servers seems to be radar.cedexis.com (some advertising / tracking rubbish on some website) which gets a SERVFAIL response much of the time (but not always).
There should be very little point in testing each of 212.159.6.9, 212.159.6.10, 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50 - they are all effectively the same.

Re: Dns seems high

Yes the timeout/retries ejs
I assume dns_bench is testing against google.com which is what i'm using. I think that timeout equates to 2000ms
results from dns top give me

I've been having trouble streaming as well, I've just not managed to put my finger on it as yet, so i just threw the net wide just incase anybody else is having trouble at all.

Edit: As you say it makes no odds testing 2 of the same, however,  nothing else i'm testing is having any issue dns wise.

One of the servers in PTN/PTW was misbehaving. It's been given a swift talking to and is now back in service.
