Plusnet one router won't work with a 6m long ethernet cable

Hi
I am using a roughly 6m long cat 5e cable to run to a network switch upstairs. But it won't work, it will work fine with a shorter cable just not a 6m long one.

As a work around I am now using another switch plugged in to the router. So router - switch - switch.

Works fine on this setup so proves there's nothing wrong with the cat 5e cable.

Why won't the hub one work with the 6m long cable?

Thanks

Have you tried different ports on the Hub ?

Yes I have tried all 3 of them no differents, even had a new router sent out and still the same. At work we have a BT router which I'm told is the same but a different colour and that one is working with a 30m cat 5e no problem.

@norm90

Have you tried the 6m cable with something else? To me it appears faulty.

I currently have the cable plugged in with a switch either end of it and works fine, plug it directly in to the router nothing no light's.
Worked fine my old Netgear router.

@norm90  Could the cable be a crossover cable ? Switches may autosense and correct but not sure of the hub.

@norm90

Can you beg, borrow or "steal" a 6m (or longer) ethernet cable from some where to try.

Re: Plusnet one router won't work with a 6m long ethernet cable

Hi
Got another cable that was a similar length, still didn't work no mater what port I tried.
I then used the same cable to go from switch to switch worked perfectly.

just  to understand, connecting hub to switch, switch to switch, switch to device works ?

How about removing the first switch so connecting hub to switch using long cable,, switch to device ?

Re: Plusnet one router won't work with a 6m long ethernet cable

If I go hub-switch-device it does not work with the long cable or the one I have borrowed.
But hub-switch-switch-device works for both cables.

Re: Plusnet one router won't work with a 6m long ethernet cable

I’ve read similar things on the BT forum which of course uses the same router…

This issue has been reported before, and an Ethernet switch has cured the problem. Ethernet switches are capable of matching different speeds and compensating for timing differences, as they have internal buffers.

Re: Plusnet one router won't work with a 6m long ethernet cable

@catshill1  thanks, you've confirmed my suspicion that the Hub2, which is a switch, was introducing errors that the external switches were correcting. Very difficult to prove remotely hence trial & error.

@norm90 Seems to have options, stick with what works, convince Plusnet to replace Hub2 with no guarantee things will change or replace Hub2 with another brand.

Surprised that Plusnet users haven't already raised this problem in large numbers previously.................................
