If i want touse a different router instead of the Plusnet one do i just put it in place of the Plusnet one..I mean connected to the BT unit..or can i just link it straight up to the line?

Depends on the router, whether you are on fibre or ADSL.
If on ADSL then virtually any ADSL2 router will work.
On fibre you either need a cable router & the OR modem, or a VDSL router. (no modem required)
If on ADSL then virtually any ADSL2 router will work.
