Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

Hi bob, in reply to the above yes I can virtually the same as you has pasted - does this rule anything in/out?

( 135.350000) WAN operating Configuration

( 132.700000) PPPoE is up - Down Rate=39993Kbps, Up Rate=2000Kbps; SNR Margin Down=22.9dB, Up=27.7dB

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

That rules out the line itself as a cause - your line is clean and the SNR is good. The faults are somehow being caused either inside the router on on your side of the network. I guess the PlusNet equipment in the exchange is detecting the faults and automatically limiting the throughput speed in the misguided belief that the faults are caused by an actual line fault. (Okay, it's a machine, it doesn't have misguided beliefs, but you get the idea.)

It's worth doing a factory reset on your router, using the "paperclip in the hole in the back" method. If you have changed the wireless SSID or WPA Key you will have to do them again but that won't affect your wired console connection, just your iPhone. See if that cures your dropouts. Even if it works, the line speed will stay low for a few days until the equipment stops thinking you have a fault and raises what is called your IP Profile again.

It occurs to me that if you are using the game console for games that send a lot of data up the line (from you to the server), the 2Mbps upload speed might not be enough and the game server might be sending you a reset command which your router is receiving and responding to by restarting. This is possible. The way to eliminate that as a cause would be to disconnect your console and check the line every few hours with your iPhone, looking in the router's Advanced Settings / Internet tab to see what your uptime is doing.

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

To add to the above, in the event log, after disconnection, I find this.
I don't download illegal films/music, or anything dodgy, just play the fifa football game. Anyone any ideas? -

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

That is saying that the router firewall is blocking the game from sending https requests to a server. It looks to me as if the game is trying to download an update but the firewall is blocking it for some reason. Then, because it is getting no response, the game tries a different server and that is blocked too. Check under Advanced settings / Firewall / Configuration that you are not set to block outgoing traffic. If that is okay, try putting your console temporarily into the DMZ and see if those messages stop appearing in the log.

Can you tell us what console you have? PS4? XBox? I don't use consoles myself, but other people here may have experience of running them through a plusnet router.

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

Hi Bob
It's a ps4 & tbh I switched off the firewall because I thought that was the issue at first. That's what I don't quite get? It's switched off & so is any setting in the members section online re connections, so I just don't get what's blocking?

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

If you did a factory reset, the firewall will have been turned on again. But if turning it off didn't solve the problem, then  maybe it's a red herring. Do the disconnections still occur even if the PS4 is unplugged from the router for a few hours?

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

@Patd95yrg Referring back to your first post, I noticed you quoted download speed of 6 mbps.  When you perform a speed test, is it still returning around 6 mbps ?

If yes, can I suggest you check your plusnet account username & password is stored in your Hub One router?

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

Hi, yes disconnections occur periodically on the iPhone wifi - no pattern though, it can be a couple of hours or 29 minutes

Re: Fibre broadband at 6mbps disconnects every couple of hours

If you own an iphone 5, or later, the Hub One by default is configured to use the same wifi (SSID) name on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.   Here is something you might try:

Can I suggest you log into the Hub One, goto Advanced Settings ->  5GHz wireless settings.

Change the setting to unsync the wifi name to 2.4 GHz wifi, and specify a new name for the 5 GHz wifi.

eg. append    -5GHz  to the name.

Save the settings.

Connect your iphone to one of the two wifi names only.  Make sure  your phone 'forgets' the other wifi name to stop it toggling between the two wifi names.

See if it makes any difference to the disconnection issue experienced by the phone.
