Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

Google (and/or Greenby) is blocking my emails to gmail recipients - WHY?
They are continually being blocked as spam???
I have been successfully emailing these gmail recipients for years while with plusnet - but now with Greenby they do not send.
Why doesn't anything work with Greenby, when it did previously when with Plusnet - if it worked with Plusnet, then it must be a Greenby problem?

Has anyone else had problems sending to gmail recipients - group emails to multiple gmail recipients and/or solo emails.?

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

@Sam8 my issue is icloud / apple email addresses. Like you, I have the same issue and it's really frustrating because I send emails on behalf of a charity and so they need to get to the recipient, but I get the 'permanent error' and have to resend via a different email address which isn't ideal.

I did read somewhere, maybe on here, that our ip addresses or something are being blacklisted and so we have to refresh them or something like that - any one expert in this care to clarify?

I feel Greenby are finding so many ways to make us all leave them?! 🤔

Oops! Just seen that you reported this about a month ago too.....

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

Hi @Sam8

Outbound emails via Plusnet are sent through us. We are aware of the spam error message when sending emails to Gmail accounts and working on a fix.

The term "via Plusnet" should perhaps be explained. Does it include all brands/providers, or just some? I know it excludes those sent via relay.force9.net if migrated, but includes relay.plus.net whether migrated or not.  Are all the others included or not?

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

@mavison

Perform an NSLOOKUP on the SMTP servers in question.

The Greenby SMTPs begin 91.xxx.xxx.xxx

relay.plus.net is currently on Plusnet servers : 212.159.9.107 & 212.159.8.107

Here is a list of the servers :

Yes, but that list STILL says to use the non-encrypted ports, which I would suggest is not a good idea, especially for portable devices.

Perhaps a better place to look is to sign on to greenby.com, then click on Manage for the email product, then clisk Settings. That gives the correct ports for encryption, and the servers you should be using for your account.

The NSLOOKUP tip is a good one, but I wish posters (especially staff) would clarify if references to Plusnet is just plus.net addresses or which other providers as well.

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

Sadly some ISPs are still allowing use of non-encrypted email authentication and message exchange.

However Plusnet email servers with encryption are :

mail.plus.net:995     SSL/TLS        POP3S
imap.plus.net:993    SSL/TLS        IMAPS

relay.plus.net:587    STARTTLS
relay.plus.net:465    SSL/TLS        SMTPS

relay.plus.net regardless of migration status.

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

Just an observation.

As a user of the Greenby Roundcube webmail software I did not have any issues with my email following transfer to Greenby.

However, I have noticed some temporary glitches of late. When I try to send an email I sometimes get an "SMTP Error..." . Sorry, I haven't recorded the rest of that error message. I find that trying again results in a successful send. How this would work out with someone using a client email program on a local device I do not know.

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

Well I thought I'd got this Greenby webmail nonsense sorted out, but no.

Now I can send and receive emails via my phone but not on webmail on the laptop. Back to getting 'SMTP Error (550): Failed to set sender'.

This is seriously starting to impact my ability to communicate online. Can anyone offer a simple solution?

Yes.

Use a reliable email provider: https://community.plus.net/t5/Email/Greenby-Webmail-Flakey/m-p/2038138#M58392

@tactilis

Your post prompted me to look at Mythic Beasts
They do get very creditable Trust Pilot reviews which on the face of it is a positive Smiley

Can I ask, did you with PlusNet and them  with Greenby get much Spam and not that that you are with Mythic with their spam filtering.......has the Spam stopped?

It seems at £20 per year it is not a huge cost but as you mention there is ongoing cost of the new(?) domain to buy as needed. Personally I would get one just for emails as I would not intend to use it for hosting.

With Plusnet, not much spam.

With Greenby more spam. But worse than that, legitimate emails kept ending up in the Greenby spam folder and I'd know nothing about them unless I logged in to webmail to look in that folder. I played around with the filter aggressiveness but it didn't resolve the problem of false positives, so in the end I turned Greenby spam filtering off and did my spam detection in my email client (Thunderbird).

With Mythic Beasts the level of spam that gets through is low and I have seen no legitimate email being flagged as spam.

In addition to the false positives on some legitimate emails, the main reasons I switched away from Greenby were:
- The slowness and intermittent unreliability of Greenby email delivery to me
- The fact that emails with multiple recipients were being delivered to only some recipients for no apparent reason.
- The time it was taking me to repeatedly investigate the above.
- The fact that you had to deal with a mostly useless bot for first line support and that second line was difficult to reach.

The extra cost of having a reliable service and human support at Mythic Beasts is worth every penny - and in any case it's not that much more than Greenby will be charging at the end of your 'free' 2 years.

The benefit of having ones own domain and email with Mythic Beasts is that you are no longer tied to an email address provided by Plusnet and can switch ISPs with no email disruption at all.

Yes, there is a one-off cost in terms of time and hassle of informing contacts and organisations of your new domain - but after that you'll never have to do it again.

You can ease the transition by setting up a forwarder from Greenby to Mythic Beasts so you still receive emails (via Mythic Beasts) from anyone who sends to your old address. I set up Thunderbird (for me) and Gmail (which my wife prefers) to tag emails that had been forwarded from the old address with a red label so we could easily spot people/orgs who we still needed to tell about the address switch.

Re: Greenby Webmail Flakey

@tactilis

Thanks for the reply and informative insights in regard the configuration and setup that you use.

I am giving a lot of thought to this and as mentioned currently looking at a new domain to be used purely for email purposes.

In that regard I am thinking of paying for a 10 year registration, which though costly upfront works out at about £14 per year.........not a lot in the scheme of things to arrange something for the longer term requirements.

Many thanks again Smiley
