Re: Very slow almost unusable

Nobody can answer that without basic information:

What BB are you on? (ADSL, FTTC, FTTP)
What are your current speeds?
What are they supposed to be?
Have you a phone line?
Have you tested your landline for noise using a phone?
etc.

Hiya @stathe

I'm sorry you are having issues with your connection and for the hassle it will be causing.  My tests are not flagging anything, can you tell me what speed you are receiving?

Re: Very slow almost unusable

Still no useable information!

Is there anyone else available your end who can help out?

WRT "wired phone", all landlines are going to be turned off nationally - not just Plusnet ones. Why exactly do you need such a phone? If you want an easy transition to a home phone then, when the landline is due to be cancelled, you could ask Plusnet to transfer you, without exit fees, to EE and then BT would  arrange for you to have a 'home phone' via their 'Digital Voice' system.

There are though some potential 'issues' with digital home phones.

Re: Very slow almost unusable

Thanks, stathe. So you are on ADSL (unsurprisingly) and we know you have a landline phone.

Those speeds look low! You are either on the end of a very long telephone line, or there is a fault. Have the speeds always been this low, or is this something recent? What speeds are you supposed to be getting with your contract, do you know?

Have you checked your BT circuit? Here: https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com

Also, you can see in your router what the current figures are for Noise margin and Line attenuation. You will have to log in to your router using the router Admin password to see this. Your router looks to me as if it coud be a Plusnet Hub 2, in which case these figures are found at: Advanced settings/Technical log
e.g. In my case (on 40/10 FTTC) these show as:

Data rate: 9.999 Mbps / 40 Mbps
Maximum data rate: 23.153 Mbps / 72.939 Mbps
Noise margin: 14.5 / 15.2
Line attenuation: 7.1 / 13.5
Signal attenuation: 7.0 / 15.2

This should help to decide if you are just unlucky in having a very long landline or there is indeed a problem.

Also, as you have a landline phone, have you checked for noise on your landline? Just dial 17070 and Option 2 for the BT Quiet Line Test. You should not be able to hear any significant hissing or any crackling during the quiet periods.

If there is, I suggest - if you do have a mobile phone - texting: "PHONE <your landline number>"
to number 61998 for the Plusnet automatic Line Test and reporting system.

CORRECTION!

My description above is for the BT automatic Line Test, rather than the Plusnet one. (Mind you, when I used it a few years ago it still worked as it recognised the line was a Plusnet phone and redirected to the Plusnet bot.)

It should have been text: "Phone <your landline number>"  to number 07800 008121 as per the "Problem" link shown above.

Ref post #7 - we need to see the stats from the ADVANCED section please.  The home page summary does not show the SNRM.

Re: Very slow almost unusable

Yes it is stathe, thanks.

Line attenuation: 44.3 / 71.0
Signal attenuation: 43.2 / 74.0

Ye Gods! Unless there is something wrong somewhere you must be on the end of a very long phone line. (> 3 miles?)

The SNR figures, along with the DSL uptime, don't seem to me to indicate anything is actually going wrong with your BB.

DSL uptime: 5 Days 5 Hrs 44 Mins
Noise margin: 6.4 / 4.4

So I don't know what to suggest. Perhaps you will just need to put up with it until full fibre (FTTP) arrives. You could try to go for an existing fibre product (FTTC) instead of your ADSL broadband. Unfortunately I understand if you do that now you would have to lose your landline (which you will eventually, anyway). So it's a question of what is most important to you. Perhaps somebody else here knows better?

Has your speed dropped to this level recently or was it always so slow? Only other things I can think of is if you can get BB wirelessly via smartphone or suchlike.

Re: Very slow almost unusable

Ouch! At that line length (attenuation) it is surprising that you’ve got the speed as good as it is. You must be very rural.

You are limited by the physics of long copper circuits - for faster speeds you need to change products as described above.
