@jmd
That level of usage overnight is just normal internet "noise" and nothing to worry about. You could try turning on the PlusNet firewall (if you haven't already) which should cut this down.
My overnight usage is in the region of 160kb.
To put things in perspective, 1000kbytes = 1Mbyte, 1000Mbytes = 1Gbyte
so, at 70kbytes/day usage you'd take 14,285days to use 1Gbyte (which is the amount of allowance for a month in PN's cheapest package!)
(I think I've done the arithmetic correctly - someone will correct me if it's wrong)
Edit: typos

Arithmetic is fine. But:
14,286 if you round up to the nearest number
70KB per day is a really small amount.

Thanks for information - it is just that it seemed a lot higher than it has been in previous months.
My broadband firewall is switched on.
But there is still the conflict over whether to unplug/switch off router or leave it on that some people seem to have have. Oh well..........

It varies from day to day and from month to month - it's just dependent on how many nefarious sorts are doing port scans and the like.
As for whether to leave it on or to turn it off... I'd say it's down to preference - no hard and fast rule. I leave mine on and have never had a problem.
I think that the only thing that you definitely shouldn't do is turn it off and on repeatedly over a short time span of, say, a couple of hours.

Many thanks to all who have replied and helped with my question regarding whether a router should be left switched on or not. Things are very much clearer now!
I'll do some tests and see whether my connection is a "Leave the router on, or else I'll get speed variations" or an "It's OK to switch it off" one.
Cheers
Keith
