Service outages - customer communication poss?

I've been with Plusnet for many years now and am a very happy customer.
Apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere but... when there are service outages (eg the one this morning where a BT 20CN/21CN circuit was down) that take down customer internet access, it's then not possible to log in to the Plusnet member centre to check if there IS a service outage causing a problem.
In that case, is it possible to send a short SMS to customers advising them that a service is out and they may be affected, then perhaps another SMS when problem has been resolved.
I appreciate the difficulties (which customers are affected, at what point do you send the SMS etc) but I wondered if there was a simple mechanism that might allow customers to get a swift simple status via SMS ... which would prove useful for me (stops me troubleshooting my router, or wandering the local street looking for BT engineer activity  Roll_eyes
Thanks!
