I'd suggest anyone who has received an email should be asking Plusnet by raising a ticket if the data about them was transmitted between Plusnet and BT, and BT and ACS Law in a secure encrypted format.

I started a thread in 'Your Feedback' asking PN to clarify their point 10 on http://www.plus.net/support/acslaw.shtml, it asked the same question as above, that thread has vanished.  Lips_are_sealed

Yes the same email address that is now publicly available to thousands. Thanks PN.  Im just going to download the list myself rather than wait for a response from PN, maybe I'd find out faster!

Hi there,
Email addresses were not contained in the information supplied, the email we sent to you will tell you exactly what information was disclosed.

As far as I can see your post was merged into this thread, as they're the same subject.

I don't think encouraging 700 people to raise a ticket is going to help matters TBH.

Re: Plusnet will give your personal details to ACS Law with not informing you!!

encrypted or un encrypted seems to be the last thorn PN need to pull out.
hope you are in deep talk's with bt's legal team on this matter and if its found to be true that the emails leaked are how bt legal team sent them then some serious punishment needs dishing out to make it loud and clear we want are details handling in a secure respectful manner.
or the very least keep to the npo orders instruction's. man how many times have we heard in this thread that PN have to keep to the npo so stop asking us to break it, hum

All news reports are about people being attached to porn torrents, which worries me as I have never downloaded a porn torrent in my life.

It wasn't porn, it was music. I'll reply to your support ticket now with further details...
Edit: Have you moved house in the last year or so? That might explain why you didn't receive a letter.

This whole situation of the leaked information (whilst shocking!) should not take us away from the original issue. I cant help but feel the heat is being taken off with regard to actually handing over our details in the first place.
I hope Plusnet are still taking this very seriously and plan to attend court on the 4th October.

... I dont know of any other ISP that has sent an email to everyone they have  given the names and addresses of.

Uh, this maybe because once they are aware of a DPA breach they are required to inform people who may have been affected, this is highly unlikely to be a sudden ability to find a spine.
Plusnets actions, nore BT's actions led to the leak, whatever Plusnet/BT did or didn't do, I don't think they are in breach of the DPA to th extent where notification would be required.

The reason for the suggestion is that while it is a matter of interest to the rest of us, anyone directly affected has an absolute right to know.
Unless Plusnet make a clear public statement answering the points about how the data was transmitted I recommend individuals affected should ask the question in a ticket.

Irrespective of whether Plusnet's or BT's actions directly led to the leak, if they transmitted data in an insecure manner they are in clear breach of the DPA and I'd suggest they should own up to the ICO promptly. It's likely that the ICO would not regard it as a serious breach and action he took might be only a "make sure you don't do it again".
If PN don't own up and the ICO themselves determine that PN are guilty of a breach the action could be more serious.

I've seen that in many reports. If that wasn't the case they've dug themselves a big hole and jumped right in!

Agreed, I tried to take that subject off to a different thread but a Mod merged it back into this one ... doh!
