Quote from: A £1000 ... solicitor ... small change.
Whatever, but see this from link
Although the ICO said it planned a £200,000 fine if the company had still been trading, the case might be used by critics of the watchdog as proof that it is still pulling its punches when it comes to enforcing financial penalties.
Sam Jardine, an associate at international law firm Eversheds, argued that the £1,000 fine was a "token slap on the wrist for a broken business".
IMHO even more important than the penalty is his card being marked by one more authority.

I bet it cost Plusnet more than that providing the customers affected with the identity theft protection.
Absolutely disgusting but we all know the ICO are weak and if you did not you know it now.

Quote Anne Muir, 58, from Ayshire, was caught with more than 30,000 files worth an estimated £54,792 in the mainstream market.
The mother-of-three was sentenced at Ayr Sheriff Court, according to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
Muir, an auxiliary nurse at Ayr hospital, was caught with the files at home by police on June 27, 2008.
The swoop followed a joint investigation with the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) - the body which represents the UK record industry.
Officers removed computer equipment and found 7,493 digital music files and 24,243 karaoke files.
The search also revealed that she was part of a "sharing hub", which meant users within her network could download music from her.
Muir pleaded guilty to a charge of distributing articles which she had reason to believe were copyrighted without a licence, to such an extent as to affect the owner of the copyright.
At an earlier hearing, defence lawyer Lorenzo Alonzi said his client had not used the network for financial gain but to build up her self-esteem.
"She has expressed genuine remorse for this and is severely embarrassed about it," he added.

Quote from: Up The first person in Scotland to be convicted of downloading music illegally has been put on probation for three years.

Was the sentence made more recently, or is this just an old piece of 'news'?

The Doctrine of Relation Back:
The effect of the doctrine of relation
back is to deem the commencement of
the bankruptcy to be earliest act of
bankruptcy committed within six months
immediately preceding the date of the
presentation of the petition.
Any property that is acquired or
devolves after commencement of the
bankruptcy and before discharge is
available to creditors.
Also
Fraudulent Preference
A Fraudulent Preference is for example where someone who is insolvent chooses to pay one creditor knowing there is not enough money to pay the others.
IIRC only if a creditor has put particular pressure on for repayment, will assets passed avoid the transaction being wound back. No doubt HMRC will also ensure they get as much as they can out of him. As to house in particular, if not immediately saleable, it can become subject to a charging order.
In other words; he isn't neccessarily out of the woods next.

Great news, but why should that affect any fine?
After all what is £1000.
