Re: Have PlusNet considered teaming up with Fon like BT do

Having bundled access to BT Openzone is one thing, having to share my limited bandwidth for others to use too is something quite different.
Even with BT Fon you have to share your bandwidth.  Officially if you opt out of FON then you don't get to use it (fair's fair); though there are quite a few ways around that.  But as has been said, you only share a small part of it (and it's pretty unusual to share any at all).

I go camping often, and these features I agree would be beneficial.
One alternative to consider is alternative ways of getting free wifi spots...

Just go camping near a McDonalds, I've occasionally stopped in their car park to pick up emails when mobile coverage has been poor.
If you're rich you could buy a coffee at Starbucks or similar.
There's also free wi-fi in many supermarkets (useful for checking their prices against others while shopping).

Re: Have PlusNet considered teaming up with Fon like BT do

I walk the streets all day, because of work, and I pick up emails automatically as I'm running an app that signs on available BTFon sites.
I joined Fon before BT involvement and so I have an option of being a Bill, can earn money, but no one has used my hotspot for the last 4 years.

Re: Have PlusNet considered teaming up with Fon like BT do

I don't know what itsme is using, but there is a FON app and a very similar BT branded app.
The BT branded app only works for FON userid's that are BT ones.
I think the FON app works for any userid, BT or 'pure' FON.
Both can connect to any FON site.
The FON app is difficult to load in the UK.  I managed to get it; not sure whether that was because I did the install via my computer (not sideloaded, using Google Play website), or I might have had a Plusnet IP address that Google thought was in Spain at the time I tried.
Often it shows as 'not available' for UK users.  You can sideload it if you can't get it via Play Store.

Can't remember how I got the app as I know it's not in Play Store in the UK. So either from a direct link on the Fon website or could have downloaded when in France.
Work a lot better than BT version. As I said earlier I walk the streets and it my phone probably log on to 20+ hotspots without any input from me.

Were there any extra costs when PN offered their OpenZone service, if so could that of been a contributing factor why it did not take off ?Huh

Hi, we did offer Openzone access a couple of years back (I forget how long) but it didn't really take off unfortunately so isn't really something we'll rush back to. If there's more interest shown though then it might well be given more serious consideration.

It was 2004/2005 and I was one of the first trialists.  The main problem was back them there was hardly anywhere you could use it.
McDonalds was the only place around here that had it and the next nearest was something like 15 miles away.
I could be wrong, but I think there was also a limit (£10?) which very soon got ate up, but you could top-up via the member centre.

Re: Have PlusNet considered teaming up with Fon like BT do

Hi
Looks like the trial in question was back in 2005, a bit before my time at plusnet I'm afraid, but I can certainly get some information if anyone requires.
It has been suggested several times by several different sources that we look into providing the wifi services, and may be something that we consider in the future, but at the moment we have no immediate plans to provide such a service

I was on that trial too, was very painful trying to connect.
with all the other 'free' wi-fi spots in restaurants / shops etc. not sure I see the merit in it.

+3 (my household)
I would like to see getting Fon from Plusnet or asking BT very nicely to provide user ID's at a small cost.
If I get a Fonera router, will this grant me access to BTWiFi and BT_Fon?
Thanks

This is what you get when you connect to BTWiFi and BTWiFi-with-FON
There is an option for Fon login

If you get a Fonera router you will get acces to the fon network, but not pure " BT wifi " just the stuff with BT wifi with Fon, as far as i know its just the stuff/access pojnts with the word Fon in them ( such as Zon fon )

Re: Have PlusNet considered teaming up with Fon like BT do

BTWiFi incorporates the Fon login.
I'm going to town later today and take some screen shots of the BTWiFi login page.
I wonder how long my BTWiFi login will last after I leave - it's associated to my @btinternet.com email address
