Thank you to you both. I have set things up with A&A at a generic number as @bmc suggested; this is working with a Windows softphone now. I can check with my new voip router when it arrives. I'll probably leave switching to FTTP till after New Year; if the change is happening near the Christmas period I suspect any issues will take longer than usual to get fixed, and then just arrange a regular Plusnet FTTC=>FTTP move and hope that A&A can transfer my old ceased number.

Is it possible to keep an existing FTTC connection and a new FTTP one at the same address? This would just be for an overlap period of a couple of weeks or a month. The reason I am interested is that way I can be sure of my landline up to the end of my FTTC contract and then transfer the telephone number (to A&A) on that day knowing the FTTP internet connection is already running correctly.

Thank you, that's very helpful, I can see it is identical up to the last hop. I think it almost certainly means we've given a wrong password to a protected part of that site and got locked out of the whole site. I'll contact the site hosts.

I'm having difficulty getting to some sites; eg https://programbits.co.uk/minster/minstv3.html It's available according to https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/programbits.co.uk?proto=https and I can reach it using a proxy server. Is there a known issue with some routes from PlusNet at the moment. You may be the site owner but not the system owner. The people running Penguin would have seen the messages in the logs and just assumed it related to unauthorized login attempts. I agree they were quite right to block our access on what they had to assume were unauthorized login attempts. The logs must show the source ip and target site (name, not just ip). I don't know if the block to source ip was at the at the target site, or the entire target hosting machine, or even all their hosting machines; but the reason for the block was failed attempts at the target site, as trackable in the logs. As site owner it seems highly relevant to be notified if my site is being targetted. Of course, I don't expect the people to do that kind of log analysis, but trivial for their program that is already doing it and (quite properly) blocking access. I don't know the level of general attempts to gain unauthorised access to different websites, but I can't believe that there would be many attempts to crack a very minor site such as ours that would cause flooding of 'illegal access' emails.

Thanks, Penguin got back to me (11 mins after raising the ticket). I'd changed the password to part of the site and not told my wife, so she gave the wrong password too many times and they blocked our IP. I'm not sure why the blocking didn't also involve a warning email to me as site owner. Stephen

Thank you. I didn't originally raise it with Penguin because I knew that there had been recent issues with some Plusnet routing that had been fairly quickly resolved. It is my own site. I have now raised it with Penguin.

Thanks for your help again. That fault page leads into lots of questions that are irrelevant to the issue, with no way of just posting the issue. I can see it would help in quite a few situations I knew Plusnet support had got worse over the years ... I did't realize how much worse. (not your fault at all, but a shame)

Thankyou. I disconnected and reconnected but got the same gateway. Will Plusnet netops see this automatically and do something about it? Plusnet seem to have gone out of their way to make contacting them as hard as possible about it. Stephen

My broadband is mainly working fine, but I can't access one site, programbits.co.uk (hosted by Penguin Internet) I can access it via proxy so the site must be working OK, and dns is working. This has been going on for 24 hours now; not just an intermittent glitch. I assume there is some kind of routing problem? Any ideas? tracert posted below. Savings for Plusnet LRS have gone right down, and also remember that you often lose some free calls when on LRS (unless things have changed recently).

Pretty much so, I think Plusnet provides John Lewis broadband. The number to ring is 0800 432 0200. 0800 013 2632 is another one that is meant to be more direct, I still got numbers to punch in and a longish wait. BT has pretty good deals at the moment, especially if you go via cashback. If you don't the rates are worse as well as not getting cashback. £10 per month for 40/10, telephone about the same as Plusnet, and over £100 cashback. It looks as if those have got worse on Quidco since yesterday, even though yesterday they were showing 4 days to go. Sadly, now £20 for unlimited 40/10. However, still £10 via Topcashback with £157.50 chasback. 1 day 6 hours to go?

Mine came on 22nd (Wednesday). I don't know if it ties in in any way with payment days, but I get my regular 'about to charge' reminder emails on 26th, for payment on 29th. My regular payment emails have been sent to both my Plusnet and my Gmail addresses. However, the price increase warning (Important information about your Plusnet service) was sent to my gmail address only.

If you can keep a package, why can't you technically offer that package also? They could, but they want to keep the number of packages low so as (a) not to confuse customers, (b) not to confuse their sales people, and (c) to simplify negotiations with BT Wholesale (or Openreach?).

I'm not from Plusnet but my understanding is (a) you can stay on 40/20 indefinitely on a rolling contract when your term contract is up, but you are very unlikely to be able to negotiate any deals (b) negotiate a deal on a new term contract which will be on 40/2 or 80/20 (c) move elsewhere. Usually,these only at the end of the current term contract. I don't see why they would bother to negotiate mid-term unless they had to. However, you may also be able to negotiate a deal (b) when they give formal notification of new telephone charges, or use that as a reason to get out of contract and move elsewhere.

Just downloaded "who is on my wifi" as a matter of interest. Seems a neat little program apart from some slight inconveniences in the GUI. Just wondering how it implements the 'block'? This machine it is installed on doesn't have any particular status on the network. If someone can get onto my network at all, they could presumably use a copy to block the genuine devices?

Chat can fail because of plugins such as ad-blockers. Try either turning off all plugins, or using another browser (just for the chat) which you probably won't have configured so will be using 'native' without plugins.

Yes, I agree 3 would be a sensible move ~~~ I wonder why they never thought of it? ? ? ? Not sure 'realtime' is the word you want given response times on the telephone and live chat. I was going to suggest 'interactive', but that is wrong too.

Plusnet telephone service is certainly pretty poor at the moment. However, if you want SLAs you will need to spend a lot more for your broadband then you pay to Plusnet. I am sure your organization is charging your customers a lot more than Plusnet is charging you. However, 30 mins waiting for a call is absurd (and the terrible music just rubs that in). Plusnet need to remove statements like We don't compromise on value or service from their advertisements. I wonder what their idea of a compromised service is?

There are so many combinations it is impossible for any web site to make sure it works properly when people put in blocking or similar add-ons. The best solution for the end user is to try with a different browser. It is not that the other browser is better, but typically people don't configure add-ons on the browsers they don't regularly use. However, I agree that isn't obvious to many end users. Plusnet can't make everything work in these cases but there are a couple of things they should do, 1: When Live Chat is actually working at Plusnet but not on your browser, they should produce an appropriate message ('Sorry, there appears to be something on your browser that is not compatible with live chat') rather than the suggestion they currently make that live chat is not working. 2: They might suggest a workaround, such as 'Try turning off all addons on your browser, or using an alternative browser.'

Live chat is showing up for me at the moment. It failed earlier because of uBlock ad-blocker. You might want to check you don't have anything similar.

My understanding is that 'Totally Unlimited' in ASA-speak means 'Unlimited' in English. 'Unlimited' in ASA-speak doesn't really mean anything at all (like so many words in advertising); maybe 'marginally more than the average person who doesn't use their connection much uses'. It is a shame that ASA didn't rule in terms of plain English, and used Unlimited to mean Unlimited It would certainly be interesting to know more details of the ASA investigation and what rules Plusnet out from being Totally Unlimited.

Basic portal is back, but at least one of the other issues isn't fixed. If I click on 'Contact us' at the top of the page, that takes me here https://portal.plus.net/home-broadband/contact/ - clicking on the 'already a customer, contact customer services' takes me to a 'What would you like to contact us about?' section - clicking on any of the options there results in... absolutely nothing happening... is still true for me. And I've just noticed that http://portal.plus.net/help/ contains a pointer to chat, but that https://portal.plus.net/home-broadband/contact/ and 'already a customer' does not. As chat is one of the main points of contact now, it seems odd that 'contact us ' does not include it. Perhaps when the 'What would you like to contact us about?' links work they will go through to chat anyway? dick:quote
