Bolt's 200m Record an iPlayer Hit

Congratulations to Jamaica's Usain Bolt who has just added the 200m Olympic gold to his collection with a new world record time of 19.3s. Plusnet customers "tuned in" via the BBC's iPlayer to see the victory; we saw an increase in traffic from iPlayer of around 250Mbps just before the start of the race going from just under 700Mbps to 934Mbps falling just short of yesterday's high of 954Mbps of iPlayer traffic. That represents approximately 500 extra people just viewing race, on top of the approximate 1,800 that were already watching the Olympic games. We're expecting similar volumes tomorrow with two British medal hopes in the afternoon along with the men's 400m final, women's 200m final and men's 110m hurdles final amongst others. There's also the beach volleyball finals in the early morning along with three more British medal hopes. Dave Tomlinson Plusnet Product Team

How much more expensive remains to be seen, but it’s clear that demand for the iPlayer is continuing to grow strong. UK ISP Plusnet saw its iPlayer traffic numbers double during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and triple during select competitions. [...]
