wifi ok but not ethernet

Apologies - can anybody suggest a fix to get an ethernet connection to hub 2... at present wifi is fine. The computer worked fine until Tues 26th and there appears to be no obvious Windows update since then. Now reports "no ethernet" when I look in the settings menu. I have tried another computer (laptop) which is fine on wifi but not on ethernet. I have used 2 different ethernet cables but this doesnt work. One post on the internet suggested using the dial up settings to set up a new internet connection, but this requires the username and password from the ISP, which is presumably not the same as the wifi password on the router. Grateful for any help. Thank you

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

@DavidJW021

Have you tried a different  LAN port on the  hub, NOT the red WAN one?

If you log in to the router and select the network tab, is it showing an Ethernet connection?

Have you tried a factory reset of the hub by pushing a paperclip or similar in the reset hole, keeping the switch closed until you get a green light?
If none of these work then I would ring Plusnet and ask for a replacement hub.

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Now reports "no ethernet" when I look in the settings menu.

Is it really reporting 'no ethernet' and not 'no internet' ?

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Thanks. Yes I have tried different LAN ports, and different cables. When I log in it shows an Ethernet option, but does not show anything connected to it.

I have not tried a factory reset as the router has only just come, ie I have made no user changes to it. This was a replacement for an existing Hub 2 that had stopped working.

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Apologies - it says "not connected". But this is definitely the Ethernet sub menu in "Network & Internet"

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

@DavidJW021 what does ipconfig/all (from a cmd window) show for the ethernet adaptor media state ?

Somethink like

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

   Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

@DavidJW021

So have you got Internet access over wireless or is it just connecting to the hub wirelessly? I’d still try a factory reset. It won’t do any harm.

If you have a blue light but no broadband then this could be that the auto configuration of your username and password entries in the hub aren’t being picked up for your account.

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Yes it says Media disconnected

nothing against "connection specific DNS suffix"

both DHCP and Autoconfiguration are enabled

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Wild thought - has the adapter 'got confused' Maybe an uninstall/re-install could fix it?

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Thanks - I have tried a factory reset and have got my blue light and wifi on various devices but still nothing on the wired connection. ipconfig/all reports the same as it did 10 minutes ago.

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

Not sure if I have understood but I did do a network reset yesterday. I downloaded a Realtek (whose ethernet card I have) problem solver to see if that finds anything but not yet tried it. My current driver is 10.75, latest is 10.76.

I did also try to use the microsoft "diagnose network problems" but this wont run as it says it cant open "ms-contact-support" link at which point I decided that this was the wrong rabbit hole to go down.

Ok , so there's a basic fault on either

1) the laptop

2) the cable

3) the router

You say you've swapped cables , so 2) sounds unlikely

The router is a replacement, did the original exhibit the same problem ?

Do you have another device with wired ethernet capability ?

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

I have tried both a laptop (which is working fine on wifi) and the desktop (with no wifi card, just an ethernet card) with different cables into different network ports on the router. I cant say if I have tried all combinations of this, but broadly changing the cables, sockets and devices has not worked.

The router arrived on Thursday, as a replacement for one that I noticed the same problem with on Tues/Weds this week. My conversation with Plusnet (who were very good) was along the lines of ... I have tried all these other things, and to me it sounds like a problem with the router, and they did a bit of thinking and sent out a new one. The last time I know I accessed the internet was around lunchtime on Tuesday, and looking at my cloud backup logs, it was clear that on Tues pm the backup failed (because there was no wired connection???)

I did look for any possible windows updates that might have reset things, but the last windows update was the previous Saturday so that did not seem likely.

I have looked at the technical log on the router - there is nothing that stands out, though I dont really know what to look for.

If the problem was only with my desktop I would consider doing things like opening it up and looking at the card, but I dont know why  I would get the same on my laptop. I have done ipconfig/all on that and it has media disconnected - though I dont at the moment have an ethernet cable plugged into the laptop.

But having said all of that, should I consider that going through the various windows resets suggested for media disconnected is worth trying on the basis that until a few days ago I had never tried to connect my laptop to an ethernet cable?

Sounds like you've done fairly comprehensive tests however I'd be very surprised if two routers were faulty in the same way.

Did you use the old power supply with the new router by any chance ?

Re: wifi ok but not ethernet

PS to all of this.

Have now run the Realtec diagnostic utility. The diagnostics - Register, MAC loopback, PHY loopback, IRQ and FIFO all pass. The cable test reports "Open"
