Help Needed please possible change of router from Asus RT-N66U to PN Hub 2

I have been very happy with my Asus router using Plusnet Unlimited Fibre Extra inc. Line rental for a long while now.
However, I have added another 2 wireless outdoor cameras to my already overused system (server, laptops, mobiles tv etc.) and the network is now extremely slow especially on one of the new cameras. I see that Plusnet are extolling the virtues of Hub2 and I wonder if this will be an improvement on my Asus which is very old now. I do have a Plusnet Hub 1 which I cannot really get st up properly. Any suggestions please. Thank you in advance, you people are always so helpful.

Katie

Re: Help Needed please possible change of router from Asus RT-N66U to PN Hub 2

@Katie222

The first thing to determine is why your network is slow. It could be overuse of the wireless channel, witeless range or simply a slow broadband connection to your home. There's no guarantee that changing to a Hub 2 would improve things.

Can you give us a bit more detail, for example:

How are devices connected, Ethernet cable or wireless?

Are all devices both Ethernet and Wireless devices slow?

If only wireless, is it all wireless devices or just some, say the new cameras?

What is your actual broadband speed as reported by the N66U?

If you want to try a Hub 2 then give Plusnet a ring on 0800 013 2632 and ask for a free one for the P&P charge. If they want you to take out a new contract in exchange, then unless you are not bothered about losing your landline phone, stress the need to keep it as they might try to transfer you to the SOGEA service.

There are better options to buying a Hub 2.

Re: Help Needed please possible change of router from Asus RT-N66U to PN Hub 2

Thank you for the help. Only my router
Attached by cable are 1 desktop (only switched on 30 minutes each day), 1 server and 1 outdoor camera. These devices are fast & stable.
Wireless - I have another 4 cameras, 2 laptops, 2 mobiles, 1 Smart tv, 1 printer and 2 doorbells which all worked fine until we added the 2 new cameras. I camera is quick but the new one is very slow at picking up motion and sendind it to the cloud or to local storage.
Actual broadband speed is 67Mbps download & 8Mbps upload.
Wireless just now on my laptop is 10Mbps down & 8Mbps upload.
Can you tell me the better options to Hub 2.
Can I just say that most of my equipment is upstairs in the office connected to the main phone socket downstairs by BT when I got fibre years ago. I looked into an extender but it seems that it woulld need to be half way down the stairs to be effective which isn't practical.

Thanks for any further advice. It is much appreciated.

Katie

@Katie222

How do you get fibre whilst plugging into a telephone socket?

@DelT  FTTC? Which is obviously what the OP is on.

@Katie222 As there is only one camera 'playing up', I just wonder if it is that which is not configured correctly?

When I got Fibre from the cabilet, BT put the double socket in the office and a modem. The phone sockets were connected to the main socket by phone cable on the outside wall. BT did adapt that cable

one of the new cameras at the front of the house is fine. The other camera at the rear of the house works eventually, just very slow at getting to the cloud.

Understand @Katie222 . Is that camera furthest from your router, and when you say 'slow at going to the cloud', do you mean its transmission speed is slow? I do notice you have a lot of Wi-Fi devices - are  they all working/transmitting at the same time? Do you have the option of FTTP (Full Fibre)?

Re: Help Needed please possible change of router from Asus RT-N66U to PN Hub 2

The router is upstairs in the office at the back of the house. The slow camera is also at the back of the house. Wireless is slower downstairs at the back of the house than downstairs at the front for some reason.
I realise that I have a lot of wireless devices which is getting more common these days. I use a VPN on the system too.
The wireless devices have been ok until these last 2 cameras. It may be that they will be ok during the night when laptops, phones, tv etc are switched off. I don't get FTTP until the end of 2025 unfortunately.
If it's any further use - when I download or upload anything, the download signal  looks like an ECG - very erratic.

Thanks again. Katie

@Katie222 Unfortunately, while you are stuck on FTTC, and your upload speed is as 'slow' as it is, you will suffer these issues - 8Mb/s does not give a lot of leeway for uploading.

Fix

Thank you so much for all replies. You have answered my query about a different router so I will await the arrival of superfast in my area and learn to switch items off when not needed.

For IP cameras I recommend hard wired power over Ethernet.
