2.4ghz and/or 5ghz best practice?

Hi,

The Plusnet Hub One router offers both 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies. Should I disable one over the other? Or leave them both running as default?

The reason I ask is because I have just run speedtest on my iphone and on my Dell laptop and the iphone is giving download speeds of 25mb/s or so and the laptop 1.5mb/s. They are both in exactly the same position and I wondered how there could be such a huge difference. Both the iPhone and the laptop are very recent, up-to-date models.

Re: 2.4ghz and/or 5ghz best practice?

I've found with Windows 10 all sorts of WiFi problems.

They have been lessened (rather than cured) by giving different names (SSIDs) to 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

I just suffixed one with 5GHz and that improved matters considerably.

Splitting the network names can be done in the advanced settings.

Worth a try.

I am the satisfied customer....

Point web browser to 192.168.1.254.

Hit Advanced Settings and enter your Hub admin password when prompted (unless you've changed it, you'll find the default password on the settings card)
Continue to Advanced Settings.
Tap on Wireless.
Choose 5GHz tab.
Change 'Sync with 2.4Ghz' to No.
Change the name of the 'Wireless SSID'
Save the changes.

5 GHz wifi signal has a shorter range than 2.4 GHz wifi.  Consequently, you are less likely to experience interference from neighbours on 5 GHz - this may be important if you are trying to stream video.

Some 'new' devices do not support 5 GHz wifi btw.
