I've just had a call from 08434994701 and when I picked it up no one spoke and then they hung up. I dialled the number the back to see who it was and there was 'nothing' and then I got cut off. Does anyone know who could have phoned me, where they got my number from and how to stop further calls? thanks

You may want to look at The Telephone Preference Service. The number of nuisance calls I've had since registering my number dropped off significantly.

The Telephone Preference Service only works if the caller is UK based. Many of these calls originate abroad.

New rules have been introduced to combat silent calls. Fines of up to £2m can be levied.

I wonder how those new rules will work with companies based and calling from overseas.

I guess they won't. Ofcom has no way of regulating these companies.

Here's something that can help with these type of calls and cheaper than true call.
Callblocker
Quote CallBlocker is easy to set up and use, it screens cold calls & silent calls for you. CallBlocker works on any home phone line, even with additional handsets and broadband.
Auto diallers used by cold callers cause silent calls! Call Blocker plugs in between your phone and wall socket and intercepts these calls before your phone rings. It plays a message stating that cold calls are not welcome and instructs personal callers to press 5 to ring through. Auto diallers are unable to press 5 and interpret this to mean that your number is useless and therefore removed from their calling lists!
