So, as I understand it, the final answer based on all the help I’ve received on this thread is:

TO PRESERVE A LANDLINE NUMBER, FULL FIBRE MUST BE INSTALLED AND CONFIRMED BEFORE STARTING TO PORT THE NUMBER

No, you have this the wrong way around.

You can port the number first to a VoIP provider without risking losing the number. What will happen is that it will automatically close your Plusnet account and anything email related that has not been ported to Greenby will be deleted.

So the purpose is to preserve the Plusnet account, not the phone number.

Re: Where is PlusNet ‘Help & Support’?

Iorgot to mention that porting the phone number first and triggering the cancellation of the Plusnet contract would also trigger Early Termination cCharges if you are still in contract.

The plus side of transferring the number first is the same as if you move the phone and broadband contract to a single provider, that is, the move to VoIP is almost seamless. Waiting until the number is placed in quarantine and recovered by the VoIP provider will take several days, during which time the phone will be dead.

Re: Where is PlusNet ‘Help & Support’?

@Baldrick1

Since you posted your kind advice, I’ve spoken to both PlusNet and BT, at great length, to no effect. Continual pressure to go to BT and pass the parcel between the two with either nonsensical or contradictory suggestions.

I haven’t yet migrated my blogs hosted on the cccgi.username.plus.com server at PlusNet to Mythic Beasts, but will be doing so.

As I understand it, porting the phone to A&A before FF is installed on 11th Aug would ensure that I retain the landline number but it will close my PlusNet account with loss of any data on their servers. Blogs outstanding email RIP!

At present I see no alternative to allowing the FF installation to go ahead next week and then hope that A&A can port the landline number while it is in quarantine. I have contacted them and this is their suggestion but …?

It looks to me like a choice between possible disaster and certain disaster, and yet BT tell me that if I do nothing I will loose the landline anyway soon anyway.
