Moving a Master Socket

Hi there,
My current master socket is in the hallway/dining area, but I want it moved to the lounge, which has my office above it. I am not getting the guaranteed speeds and I believe moving my master socket will improve this.

I've seen posts on other forums saying Openreach are the people to contact, and others saying your provider is the first point of call.

Could someone please point me in the right direction to do this?

Cheers

Re: Moving a Master Socket

@xMtch I doubt moving the Master socket would make much difference. When you say you are not getting the guaranteed speeds, how far off are you, and what service and router are you using?

To get it moved, you do have to go through Plusnet, and I understand OR charge £160.00+VAT for the privilege.

Re: Moving a Master Socket

well our guaranteed speed is meant to be 37.5mbps download and 15 upload. We are lucky if we get 20 download, and 5 upload.
It previously was under 10 download when we moved into the property over a month ago, and got an engineer to come out and try to increase the speeds, but it's still not what i'm paying for, which is why I'm tempted to see if moving the socket would increase the speed.
We have the best package we can get, which is fibre as full fibre is not available as of yet. We have the Plusnet 2.0 router I believe.

@xMtch

It sounds like you are connecting via wireless. Guaranteed speeds only apply to devices directly connected over Ethernet.

You could always install an Ethernet cable between your halfway and lounge and fit a wireless access point in the lounge.

Re: Moving a Master Socket

If I could install an enternet cable between the two rooms, what would be the best way to do it without it looking messy? I have tried a Wifi extender, but that made no difference.

What else would you suggest I do?

Re: Moving a Master Socket

As I said, moving the socket will achieve little, if anything.

I appreciate the following means a little work for you, but if you provide it, maybe other Community members can make suggestions:

For Community members to be able to help, information from these sites, as screenshots, posted as pictures within the topic, not as attachments:-

BT Broadband Availability Checker (obscuring your phone number), where a landline phone is no longer supplied or known use the address version BT Broadband Address Availability (obscuring your address)

BTW Performance Tester - Over a wired (Ethernet) connection if at all possible, please report the 'ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTICS'- if it will run. This test is recommended to be performed with only one device connected.

Sight of the broadband connection status from your Hub (with the 'Username' obscured) would also be of help.

For the Hub One -

Navigate from the Home Screen to Troubleshooting > Helpdesk

For the Hub Two -

Navigate from the Home Screen to Advanced Settings > Technical Log > Information

Where the phone line is still active, it may also be a good idea to report the results of a Quiet Line Test - dial 17070 option 2 from a (preferably corded) phone. After the confirmation of your phone number, there should be total silence apart from the regular 'Quiet Line Test' announcement. Any other noise - report a PHONE fault first.

If you are unsure about any of the above, please just ask - I am happy to help.

There are flat Ethernet cables which which you can use.

Re: Moving a Master Socket

Thank you for the post. I will do all of this when I get back home from work.
We do not have a home phone, so I cannot do the last part, unless it's possible to do on a mobile.

@xMtch

If the master socket was moved to the lounge, what would be the route? A CAT5e Ethernet cable is about the same diameter. Every property is different. You can use up to 100m of CAT 5e so length of cable is not an issue.

Is there an external route? If so either use conduit or use specified outdoor cable.
