Re: Query about fibre upgrade and concurrent landline/fibre + keeping BT phone number

@Kwak

You have 30 days to port the number from when it's ceased. You do it asap once FF is installed just in case of a problem which gives you time to try and get things sorted. I suspect most of the horror stories are from the past - I've not seen anything on this Forum recently.

1) Correct - you lose the landline but it's usually for a few days.

2) A second account from PN does indeed lose all your add ons plus you have to pay for it.

If you were to choose A&A for VOIP you can set up an account beforehand with a generic number. This gives you the chance to ensure your phone works with VOIP. When FF is installed you then port in your own number and once this has happened cancel the generic number,. Cost a bit more but it gives you peace of mind that your phone still works on VOIP.

@Kwak

You're overthinking this and making things far harder for yourself than it actually is.

You want to keep your fixed IP address and possibly other things associated with your present PN ADSL account, so your only option is to upgrade your PN ADSL account to FTTP, which in turn will cease your landline.  You then port your landline number to VoIP using someone such as A&A who have a reliable porting reputation.

BT are very unlikely to impose ETCs.

Re: Query about fibre upgrade and concurrent landline/fibre + keeping BT phone number

Ok thanks and thanks to everone, @bmc and @corringham, I'm glad I asked as this needed clarified.

It's certainly not I think intuitive as to how it works, specifically ADSL being pulled pulls a landline number.

Looks like fibre then dealing with voip is the way.

I'm not sure that simply canceling your ADSL service with Plusnet would cancel the BT line. The other way i.e canceling the BT line WILL cancel the Plusnet ADSL. That doesnt help you though, since canceling will close your Plusnet account and terminate all your PLusnet services i.e static IP, email etc

However, upgrading the Plusnet ADSL to FTTP (or SoGEA)  WILL cancel the BT phone line. The reason is that Plusnet will place a 'change of ownership cease' on the line as part of the upgrade process.

Re: Query about fibre upgrade and concurrent landline/fibre + keeping BT phone number

@Kwak As noted above if you want to keep PlusNet email you need to migrate/upgrade ON THE SAME ACCOUNT. I have no idea if that will affect your BT landline, I'd not expect it to but I'm no expert. Also I've no idea if a static IP can be carried over, I'd be surprised if it could given the different technology.

A new FTTP alongside what you have will be a new PN account. You will also have to pay installation charges (as I did). I chose that route to reduce risks.

With a second PN account active PN were happy to terminate my "old" ADSL account immediately without any penalties whatsoever, though I was "out of contract". Similarly when I moved my phone number BT terminated immediately with no penalties, also "out of contract". Both PN and BT paid refunds of part-months rentals paid in advance.

a static IP is associated with the account , not the product. So it will be retained across any upgrade.

Re: Query about fibre upgrade and concurrent landline/fibre + keeping BT phone number

I am in the same position BT landline and Plusnet ADSL broadband.

Got the BT letter a few weeks back saying that soon they will be switching to digital so you can no longer have different suppliers. I assume they will notify me again with a date, as opposed to just switching and automatically cancelling the Plusnet broadband, but who knows for sure.

So it would be wiser to get it sorted sooner or later.

The reviews for Plusnet and Greenby over the past few months are really very poor, they seem to have trashed their reputation. So signing up for a new 2 year contract isn't as easy as it would have been in the past.

Re: Query about fibre upgrade and concurrent landline/fibre + keeping BT phone number

@steed

Yes I got that letter. I found it OTT scaremongering to try and push people to BT, if I remember rightly it said something about losing my service "soon" but with no dates at all. I called them up and they had no date, and said probably Jan 2027 when the big switchoff is.

I know people need to get their act in order preferably not last minute, but just give them the facts, don't dance around things in a "scary" way.
