Would it be possible for the plustnet team to change my rDNS from 'username'.plus.com to 'something generic'.plus.com

Thanks for getting back to me.
I've given them a call twice. Very pleasant to chat to but I've been told that they are not clear how this can be done and suggested that I come to this forum and ask the question.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have a static IP on your account, so I'm surprised this happened. Can you drop the connection later/when you aren't using it, and let me know if you get another IP assigned. This should then give you ip.plus.com as your rDNS.

Hi,
I've just shutdown router + ONT for 30 mins.
On reboot reassigned same IP with same rDNS record.
