rDNS change request please!

My user name is showing via the reverse dns process.  I am on a VDSL2 dynamic IP using a BT smart hub 2 router.

Is it possible to stop the user name appearing associated with the dynamic IP address please?

Using GRC shield Up! it shows:"

The text below might uniquely
identify you on the Internet

Your Internet connection's IP address is uniquely associated with the following "machine name":

ianxxxxxx.plus.com
"

Re: rDNS change request please!

If you have that as your host name then you are on static ip, not dynamic.

Re: rDNS change request please!

I am pretty certain that I am on a dynamic IP.  Normaly there is an extra charge for a fixed IP and I don't have that.

I can't find a record of the IP adrs in the router event log, but I am sure it changes every time the link resets.

Re: rDNS change request please!

The charge is a one off £5. not a monthly fee. There are certain situations where a static ip is applied to your account without a fee. For example, I think failed billing or changing the broadband firewall will apply a static ip.

If you were on a dynamic ip it would show as <ip address>.dyn.plus.net

Looking at your IP history of visiting these forums then you were on dynamic, but at some point it switch.

Re: rDNS change request please!

Thanks @dvorak ,  I could have been changed to a static IP without my knowledge.  I did recently change my firewall settings so perhaps it is related to that.

I would still like the reverse DNS not to reveal my user name, as it would seem to be a security risk.  Should I really be raising a fault ticket?

Hopefully one of the staff will come along shortly and pick this up.

Re: rDNS change request please!

Is there anyone at plusnet able to action this?  I know it is a bank holiday weekend, but I feel unhappy at my user id being published on the internet like this.

Or is there another way to request this is changed?   I have no use for this (as far as I know) as I don't run a web or mail server on my connection - so if it could be changed to something anonymous or random based on my IP address that would be great.

Re: rDNS change request please!

Hi there,

Really sorry for the delay, I've raised a task to update the rDNS record of your static IP to the IP.plus.com

This should be done for you within 3 working days.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Fix

I'm really sorry about that @Ian06 Sad

The task on our end was completed, but you're right, an NS Lookup still shows your account username, NetOps may have made a slight error here.

Not to worry, I've raised a new task and will check again for you once it's marked as complete.

Re: rDNS change request please!

@adam945 Thanks.  That seems to have been done now, my rDNS no longer shows my user name.
