Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

@dabow

I agree with most of what you say - it is slow and unreliable and I'm not that thrilled with Plusnet over this (and also that they don't support folks who want to keep landline via a plugin box, but that's another issue!).  I'm giving Greenby the benefit of doubt for now, and seriously thinking about leaving plusnet - but they are cheap (guess why) and our local altnet does not do any phone stuff so that leaves us with Zen ?  certainly not BT!

As for outgoing mail, after the last major outage at plusnet that went on for well over a week for me, I started using SMPT2go for all outgoing (using betterbird pop mail) and have had 100% service.   Not that you can know to reply if the mail didnt arrive of course Wink

Hi jkg

My notification was sent to MyUserName@globalnet.co.uk ...

(I have since worked out how to access  MyUserName@MyUserName.plus.com and this also has the notification e-mail.)

As a couple of decades customer of Plusnet I feel severely let down and will have to unfortunately consider a supplier change when contract expires.

I'm in a very similar position. The longstanding email address is a large part of the inertia which prevents me from changing ISP. Unless it becomes more reliable, I'll be checking the market before next renewal.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

As long as you have a <my username>@<some flakey internet provider> email you are their hostage. What you need is your own domain name. You can then host this where you wish and either use the hosting company's email service, your ISP's email service or a 3rd party (e.g. the greenby thing).

What this means it that you can move ISPs, hosting companies and email providers but you keep all your email addresses - similar to porting your phone number when you change cellphone providers.

So, my email has been <whatever I like>@<my domain .co.uk> for many years. I've been using Plusnet's email system for a number of years during which time I've had three hosting companies*. I could have used Greenby's email system but that would have depended on it actually working in anything like a reliable way - so I've moved it to my domain host's system rather than take the risk. It's working well so far - desktop client and webmail.

Cost is £7.20 inc vat a year for domain hosting and £3 a month for hosting unlimited domains - website and email - subject to overall bandwidth limits (which are quite large). I'll probably be moving from Plusnet too at the end of this contract - having to reorganize my web hosting has meant that the static IP that Plusnet gave is no longer of use.

*top tip: avoid anything owned by GoDaddy.

Yes, no secret: mentioned and recommended by others too on these threads: Mythic Beasts.

Excellent Cambridge based company featuring real human beings. And not owned by BT, GoDaddy, etc.

IIRC the basic six quid + VAT a year domain hosting gives you free email forwarding (to greenby or whoever). I've got a couple of domains and a little website/blog for family and friends and t'other half has her own small business website, so it's costing us three quid a month for web hosting and email for the lot. Very happy customer so far 🙂

Should we even by tying ourselves to fibre?

I notice that 3 are advertising unlimited data for £16 per month. This is a 4g system they claim works in my location.

Anyone know about this? Do you get constant drop-outs on iPlayer and YouTube I wonder?

Our friends are on an internet over mobile data system like this (pretty sure they use 3).  It is fine when it works but being mobile signal based, the speed and availabilty does fluctuate a fair bit.  I also had a temporary mobile data internet setup for a month (using O2) when the landline was being repaired and had similar problems.  YMMV

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

I like to watch iPlayer, YouTtube and CBS News via Pluto on the internet TV. Sounds like that's not going to work in a useable way.

BTW we've had Hyper-optic AND BT Openreach "engineers" in my street this morning.

Net effect - my (copper landline) phone is now cut off and the internet is intermittently off or snail-paced.

Managed to report a fault to PlusNet via VOIP: and lo the bloomin email is actually working:

Dear Mr xxxxx,

Were sorry youre having a spot of bother with your Plusnet phone service. Please be assured that we are doing everything to get the service restored as soon as possible. Weve raised this fault to our suppliers who are currently investigating the fault.

You wont need to contact us for updates. Well monitor it for you and be back in touch as soon as our suppliers have taken a look.

These faults can take up to 3 working days to be resolved.

Should I bhe holding my breath??

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

They sorted the problem out by 5 pm. A pleasant surprise compared with previous times -  eg last September when the phone/internet was off for 4 days.

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Within the last 24 hours I've had TWO UPS Urgent Delivery held 419 emails and ONE Attention Beneficiary 419 email.

I think PlusNet generally filtered these out and deleted them - or at least chopped off their virus laden attachments.

Is this service something we can no longer expect from (soon to be ) paid for Greenby?

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

I also seem to getting more Spam emails since the migration to Greenby, so is my email address more visible to spammers ?

After a rather difficult migration, where I never received any notification that migration had commenced, the email system is now working reliably, but runs very slowly and takes ages to load / display new emails. I beieve Plusnet mislead us by stating we were moving to a much better email system, as my experience is it's worse, not better !

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

In connection with my last message about "did Plusnet mislead us about the quality service we would receive from Greenby", I've just discovered the Trustpilot site for Greenby :-   https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/greenby.com

Interesting reading !

Re: Update on Plusnet email migration to Greenby

Had a welcome to Greenby email this afternoon followed by a bunch of regurgitated emails from early January.

I thought the migration happened 08 Dec 2025.
