So it's a bit of a mystery why this is happening to you.
PS. I wouldn't stay logged in to Google or Yahoo mail for hours except whilst using it, never mind days/weeks. I would regard that as a security risk.

What do you have for the following settings -
Displaying messages - 'After message delete/move display the next message' - Ticked or Not ticked
Server Settings - Main Options - 'Mark the message as read on delete' - Ticked or Not ticked
Server Settings - Main Options - 'Do not display deleted messages' - Ticked or Not ticked
Server Settings - Maintenance - 'Compact Inbox on logout' - Ticked or Not ticked
Are you now logging out of Roundcube everytime?
What do you have for the following settings -

Can you try unticking all those three as they aren't crucial to usage and leave it like that to see if the problems disappear?

I have temporarily altered those settings - though I can only remember setting the first one - and don't even know what teh third one means...

Over the last three days I've carried out an experiment. After checking webmail emails in the morning I've left the browser open and logged in when going off to work - then checking the situation on my return.
On both Monday and Wednesday the session had terminated. On Tuesday it hadn't...
Would logging on at work affect this?

Logging in at work may have affected it, however, I've seen the same problem when only logged in on one machine.
I log in to RC when I get to work, and usually it stays logged in all day, however every now and again I'll check the RC Tab and find the session has expired or is invalid.
One common factor I've noticed is that every time this happens, I'll have a new message when I log back in (but it doesn't happen with every new message).
It's as if, when trying to add the new message to the list, every now and again RC trips up over itself and kills the session.
