Inbox automatically receiving many previously deleted received messages and not able to delete them.

My inbox started to receive what turned out to be over 4000 previously received and deleted emails. I couldn't stop this download. When I eventually tried to delete them in tranches of about 30 they did delete OK. However, after about 300 had been deleted the deletes would not complete and a message appeared saying -   "The message could not be moved to Deleted because writing to folder failed. To gain disk space from the file menu first choose Empty Deleted and chose Compact Folders, and then try again". I have done this but nothing has changed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you are using a POP3 client?

Such issues are a POP3 client index issue, not a server issue.  These issues do not happen with an IMAP client.
