Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

That could be an SNR Reset and an attempt to adjust the Target SNRM that Adam was talking about (reply #201)

One other straw, perhaps Adam can check with BTw/OR whether they were doing any work inside your exchange the last 2 nights.
Edit: to be explicit, that's not specifically on your line, other exchange work which may have affected yours indirectly.

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

I still think this could be something being switched on and/or off whether automatically or manually I don't know.  Nothing is set to come on / go off automatically - too warm for central heating 🙂  the fridge and freezer may well go on / off but neither is new or bought and installed within the period since all this started. I can think of nothing that has changed in the past two days to produce those conditions
avodat, can you think of anything you may have switched on or off at those sort of times, or anything that may do so automatically.  I make a cup of tea, as I have done for years, near 9p,m at night. It is not a new kettle, but some of those times are far too late. I haven't been making tea since midnight as on the latest batch of glitches
It's odd that this has only started since the builders started work on your bathroom. Have they finished yet?  They were tiling yesterday, will not work Sat or Sun and will finish next Tuesday

Is there an Immersion tank in the bathroom? If so, is it a new one?  There is no power in the bathroom - there will be new lights and a new shower but they are NOT in place yet. There is no immersion tank or storage radiators in the house

My turn to clutch at straws - have they replaced any pipework with plastic pipe? Have they moved or altered any electrical earth wires? I'm sure the answer will be yes to the first of those but NO electrical equipment is operational in the bathroom at the moment
Have they altered or added any electrical wiring?  Yes, but there is no power in the bathroom - the new shower and the new lighting etc have not been connected or installed
Also can you look at your ticket to see if there are any notes on it with anyone trying to do anything in that time frame?   Nothing there apart from the ticket is being kept open because of continued disconnections
One other straw, perhaps Adam can check with BTw/OR whether they were doing any work inside your exchange the last 2 nights I hope he has!

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

Easiest way to cover this is to deal with any points that need addressing further and ask any additional questions.

Also can you look at your ticket to see if there are any notes on it with anyone trying to do anything in that time frame?   Please remind me how to do this

You log into the Portal Member Centre (My Account) and goto "Questions" . Try this link will hopefully go there  (via login)

How is your hot water currently heated then, or is it off with the central heating?

My turn to clutch at straws - have they replaced any pipework with plastic pipe? Have they moved or altered any electrical earth wires? I'm sure the answer will be yes to the first of those but NO electrical equipment is operational in the bathroom at the moment

There does not need to be electrical equipment in the bathroom BUT there ought to have been/might have been what's called earth bonding wires on the pipework - they need to be asked if they have removed any such wires (even though new ones must be connected later).

Have they altered or added any electrical wiring?  Yes, but there is no power in the bathroom - the new shower and the new lighting etc have not been connected or installed

They may have done some preparatory work and been investigating wiring or moving some or made initial or temporary connections - they need to be asked.
And where did they plug their equipment in when they arrived? I'm not suggesting that anything was their fault, but I find it too much of a coincidence that we are seeing drops now that we didn't see before work started.
Also too much of a coincidence they arrived yesterday and there was immediately a power glitch which resulted in a cold start of the modem/router.
Now, right this moment I have had a thought - you are currently plugged in the hall with an extension power lead. Is there any chance that this lead may have been "disturbed" in anyway by people walking in the hall. Indeed is it possible that you may have walked in the hall when that cold start occurred around 0933 yesterday?
With regard to the previous electrical questions, I am mindful of the age of the property and the general state that you've mentioned - a minor disturbance of electrical items could result in electrical problems not previously seen. I am being cautious.

One other straw, perhaps Adam can check with BTw/OR whether they were doing any work inside your exchange the last 2 nights I hope he has!

This is not something that would normally be done and he would have to contact BTw/OR to find out. We are trying to find possible explanations for the xDSL drops that we hadn't previously seen and eliminating as many possibilities as possible would be a good idea.
Edit: to be explicit this is not work specifically on your line, but general exchange work that may have had an indirect effect.
Did you have any more xDSL linestate downs last night?

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

Easiest way to cover this is to deal with any points that need addressing further and ask any additional questions.

Also can you look at your ticket to see if there are any notes on it with anyone trying to do anything in that time frame?  Please remind me how to do this
You log into the Portal Member Centre (My Account) and goto "Questions" . Try this link will hopefully go there  (via login)  Our posts crossed - there is nothing on the ticket

I know what bonding is, and I suspect they may well have removed or changed the wiring - but the electric wiring was done on Monday/Tuesday, so that the ceiling could be fitted in place, not Wednesday

Indeed is it possible that you may have walked in the hall when that cold start occurred around 0933 yesterday?  It may have been, but it is where you guys asked me to put it - it is inside the front door!  As such I or they could have brushed a foot against the power cable -but the router is underneath a table that stands about 14 inches high so they, or I, would have to purposely touch, knock or kick it. They are aware of the router being there and these investigations.
With regard to the previous electrical questions, I am mindful of the age of the property and the general state that you've mentioned - a minor disturbance of electrical items could result in electrical problems not previously seen. I am being cautious. Only an electrician would be able to measure such changes - a full inspection of the electrics of the house will be carried out on 15th September for the Landlords' Certificate to be issued (this is NOT related to any problems or the bathroom - it is mere coincidence)

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

Anotherone - I have kicked the power lead near to the router and I have moved plugs and the router around but there have been no glitches. The workmen have arrived to begin connecting the electrical parts to the mains supply and to continue tiling the bathroom today. The power to the bathroom is still OFF.

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

Well if nothing else the electrical inspection will at least resolve anything should there be anything not right.
Frankly, right at this time I see no point in the modem/router remaining in the hall, if anything, matters are worse. You may need to plug it back again there if a engineer is going to attend at some future date.
With regards to Adam checking exchange work, I've edited my original posts to be explicit that this meant general exchange work that could have indirectly affected your line, there looks to be some PPP drops that were most likely BT maintenance, but it's the xDSL ones that are also of greater interest. I'll come back to those in a follow on post, sorry, I missed your first post this morning.

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

A couple of quick comments, there's no need to waste your time editing the log to redact old IP addresses, it's only the latest one that might be of some concern.
Just a reminder that just because you've had equipment before May this year doesn't mean it can't now be a problem. Things can go faulty!  For example you mentioned the combi boiler was there before you! Not that I think that it may causing any of the recent issues - timings are not consistent for a start - just a point to bear in mind though - things can go faulty!
Do you know what the wireless station is that can't get authorised? This also cropped up in yesterday's logs.

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

In a word: No!   I thought it might be some PlusNet thing. I'll check the MAC number It is my wireless printer which the router can usually access with no trouble, when the router is in its normal place - now they are at opposite ends of the house it is having trouble connecting.  By the way, I use an android app called FING which shows a lot of basic data about anything conneected to the same router as the device is connected to. Great for tracking what / who, is connected to your router!

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

OK, ignore my previous remark about the PPP sessions, last nights drops are all associated with xDSL events.
Also I think we can dispense with the theory about this being dusk/dawn related as this lot started just after midnight.
I've listed the start of each xDSL down below.
<173> Sep  4 00:32:59 xDSL linestate down
<173> Sep  4 00:37:38 xDSL linestate down
<173> Sep  4 00:41:30 xDSL linestate down
<173> Sep  4 03:04:11 xDSL linestate down
<173> Sep  4 03:32:53 xDSL linestate down
<173> Sep  4 03:42:39 xDSL linestate down
<173> Sep  4 04:12:38 xDSL linestate down
This is now getting very silly. I suggest, use the disconnect method mentioned way back in this thread,  move the modem/router back to it's normal location and we'll see if this issue continues. If so, I think an alternative modem/router would be the thing to try next. I'll send you a PM.
PS. Red is a harsh colour to reply in, Blue would be nicer  Wink
PPS Thanks for the FING tip, noted for future reference.
PPPS as an aside there were some PPP session CHAP challenges like the following
<38> Sep  4 03:43:56 PPP CHAP Receive challenge from rhost JUNOS (Internet)
Not a Plusnet Gateway name I recognise, will be curious to learn more.

Re: Trinitarian broadband!!!

OK blue will be used - sorry, I am used to marking student papers in red so that my comments (good or bad) stand out on the page  Smiley

Will move router back on Saturday - the builders are not here that day
