Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Thanks. Spent today reinstalling my windows pc. Thankfully I don't really use it so not much to do but having the broadband up has helped me get drivers and updates. Not bad for the hard drive. I ordered it at 6:30pm last night and it arrived this morning at 7:30.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

James, I think the router was delivered yesterday but returned to the post office because I wasn't in so I'll go get it today.
When I've plugged it in, will the same tests be run with the new hardware so that I can rule out the internal stuff and pretty much confirm the problem is from the master socket outwards?

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Yep, I can have similar tests run.
Let me know when you've got the router and see if it behaves better than the plusnet netgear one.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Can I just ask what it is you do that causes the disconnect? I mean the line is running at an ok speed now and I downloaded world of warcraft again (damn harddrive) last night which is about 7GB and it was ok. Yet the tests seem to cause a drop. Is it a particular frequency or trying a high sync or something?

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

We're not causing your router to drop the connection.
It's basically a loss in signal from your router to the BT exchange, causing the connection to drop.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

So why do I disconnect during the tests? I know you aren't deliberately disconnecting it, but everytime the tests have run I've lost connection.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

We can run what's called an intrusive line test, which does disconnect the line as part of the testing.
I generally don't do those ones though.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Ah, so it's the test disconnecting, not the router/connection failing? I see.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Hi James,
Got the router plugged in and setup. Everything now up to the router is from the box you sent me. Your filter, cable and router. Very happy with that since it should hopefully prove where the fault lies, inside or outside. Can you run the tests at some point to see if there is an improvement/fix? Is the plan of action to wait and see if an error re-occurs?
Pretty basic router but looks like it does what it says on the tin. I should probably have got a router when I joined PN but I deferred on it.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Hi Jayed,
You're probably the best test we have currently - are you seeing an improvement?

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Well, sync speed is the same and my previous setup had been up and stable for the past 50 hours (sorry didn't write it down when I reset) so at this exact moment in time I didn't have problems, but that's intermittent problems for ya...
I have noticed that the DNS lookup seems to be faster though. When I type in a url/click link/bookmark the page seems to be found faster. Loading seems the same though.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Right, been on about 3-4 hours now. I've just found the stats in the router so thought I'd post them since I saw Oldjim saw problems in some on another thread, just in case...

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

k, I'm a bit confused...
The DSL screen of the router says:
DSL Connection
Link Information

Uptime: 1 day, 6:41:43

DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 1,952

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/MB]: 0.00 / 220.63

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 17.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 60.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 14.0 / 15.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 15,484

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 32

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 29

So 1 day 6 hours up... but there's also an Internet screen and that says:
Internet

Connection Information

Uptime: 0 days, 0:28:30

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 81.58 / 187.59

Username: *************

Password: ********

Remember Password: Yes

IP Address: ****************

Primary DNS: 212.159.6.9

Secondary DNS: 212.159.6.10

28 Minutes??? So which is right? Does that mean I'm still getting disconnects with this new router too?

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

You can get logged out from the Internet without losing ADSL sync.  It's the latter you need to be looking at.  Don't worry about the logout.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

So why would I log out? I mean I didn't ask for a log out.
