Fibre Speed Issues Again

I’m on Plusnet’s Fibre Broadband package.

Back in July last year I was having issues with download speeds being below my guaranteed minimum of 36.4Mb (speeds were around 20Mb). I was also getting slow upload speeds of around 1-2Mb. My contract renewed in December and the minimum speed guarantee was increased to 40.6Mb

I’ve been having issues lately with some buffering on certain programs and checked the speeds. They are around 20Mb download and 10Mb upload. I did a reboot of the router (Hub 2) but that made no difference.

I live in a rural area with no mobile signal and don’t have a landline so calling a helpdesk isn’t really an option.

When I had the issue last year (https://community.plus.net/t5/Broadband/Speed-Issues/td-p/2013331) I got lots of help from @jab1 and @Dan_the_Van. Thank you both. The issue was fixed when @Marsh ran a line test.

Is that something I can request here?

Details from tests are attached.

Re: Fibre Speed Issues Again

@IJJ Unfortunately, you appear to nave had a spell of DSL drops around the period 16-22 March which have resulted in your current situation.

I would suggest normally raising a fault via the bot, but without a reliable mobile signal, and no landline (how do you contact anyone?), that is difficult.

As there is, or was, an obvious fault, you will have to contact PN - somehow - and ask them to investigate.

Re: Fibre Speed Issues Again

The mobiles usually piggyback the Wifi but it's not particularly reliable. For other stuff we walk to the end of the garden where the mobile signal is more reliable.

Would the drops be anything to do with Openreach working on the lines (they had the lane closed for a couple of days as they went from one end to the other doing whatever they were doing).

OK I'll have to get them to tell me what to do, do it, then call them back afterwards. It's a pain but it's usually the only way.

Re: Fibre Speed Issues Again

The OR work could have had an effect, but it would be difficult to prove - IMO.

@IJJ

21:55:09, 22 Mar. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=25165kbps, Up Rate=8737kbps; SNR Margin Down=3.4dB, Up=6.1dB
21:54:40, 22 Mar. System start Button press (PowerButton)
21:54:39, 22 Mar. System up
21:54:25, 22 Mar. WAN Auto-sensing last connection port: DSL WAN

01:42:37, 21 Mar. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=16731kbps, Up Rate=8744kbps; SNR Margin Down=6.6dB, Up=6.2dB
01:42:04, 21 Mar. DSL Link Down: duration was 247377 seconds

04:59:15, 18 Mar. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=15308kbps, Up Rate=8684kbps; SNR Margin Down=7.1dB, Up=6.1dB
04:58:42, 18 Mar. DSL Link Down: duration was 159008 seconds

08:48:42, 16 Mar. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=17049kbps, Up Rate=8583kbps; SNR Margin Down=5.6dB, Up=6.1dB
08:48:09, 16 Mar. DSL Link Down: duration was 4823342 seconds

12:59:15, 19 Jan. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=69755kbps, Up Rate=18809kbps; SNR Margin Down=3.4dB, Up=5.9dB
12:59:15, 19 Jan. DSL Link Up: Down

Looking at the relevant events.

There have been three DSL Link down since 19th January; there is a significant drop in sync DSL drop 19 Jan 69755 kpbs to  16 Mar 17049 kbps.

Two of the events 18 Mar 04:48 and 22 Mar 01:42 might be a DLM resync. You tried a Hub reboot 22 Mar 21:54

Looking at last years event Technical log image posted 12-07-2025 4:56 PM

Screenshot 2026-03-28 095945.jpg

Now it is

Maximum Data rate,8.5 Mbps / 24.7 Mbps
Noise margin,5.3/3.0
Line attenuation,21.4/26.5
Signal attenuation,21.4/32.0

The Line attenuation has increased which has resulted in the speed drop, the Hub thinks it's further away from the green cab.

Are you still using the test socket as you did last year? I would try that again if not.

Increased Line attenuation can indicate a high resistance joint somewhere between your master socket and the green cabinet.

I doubt the fault bot would find that.

Re: Fibre Speed Issues Again

Deleted because the o.p. seems to have issues using wi fi calling and that was the subject of my post.

Re: Fibre Speed Issues Again

So I toddled off to the bottom of the garden to text PN.

Relatively painless as I didn't get the expected, unplug this, reboot that, change this setting etc. Just the Bot picked up an issue, directed me to book a slot then got someone to call me.

They've got someone coming out on Monday. He said they can see an OR issue logged already. Also said that the fault the Bot logged wasn't a speed fault as it couldn't find the guaranteed minimum speed but he's updated the log. Completely painless and hassle free.....although we did suffer a brief connection issue on the mobile! The joys of living in a signal blackspot.

@Dan_the_Van Nothing has changed in the setup since last year.
