Broadband speed issues

Hi

I have recently moved from BT broadband to PlusNet Fibre Extra broadband.

I seem to be having major problems with download speeds. When I do a speed test I am getting about 21Mb/s download and 13 Mb/s upload.  The upload speed is fine, but the download is extremely frustrating as when I was with BT, it was consistently over 50Mb/s

The email I received from Plusnet when I joined said that the Minimum Guaranteed Speed was 31.8Mb (which is still slow, but would be better than I am getting).

Would I be better to use my BT home hub instead of the PlusNet one?

Regards,

Pete

Re: Broadband speed issues

Hi Pete, I've just tested your line and it's showing a synch speed of approximately 77mbps and no faults are being flagged up. With that in mind it would be a good idea to try taking the WiFi link out of the equation (assuming you were connected wirelessly that is) by testing speeds over a cabled connection to the router.

Re: Broadband speed issues

OK, I have just connected using an ethernet cable and done aa speedtest.  This time, the download speed is 66 Mb/s and upload is 13.3 so there must be a wifi problem.

So, is the wifi speed of the Plusnet hub a lot slower than the BT Home Hub?  Everything is in the same location as with the BT Home Hub.  Can I use the BT Home Hub with Plusnet?  What settings do I need to change?

Pete.

Re: Broadband speed issues

Cheers for trying that, feel free to try the BT Hub, you should be able to use that with our connection if you wish but a few change to the Hub One's WiFi settings should be all that's needed.

Please try following the checks here and do let us know how you get on:

Re: Broadband speed issues

OK,  I've had a look and tried out the checks on the link provided - no difference,  I think that I will try the BT Hub later on tonight and see if that makes any difference.

Cheers.

Re: Broadband speed issues

Hi,

I've set up my BT Home Hub and run the broadband speed tests.

I get 69.7 Mbps download and 13.4 Mbps upload.

So, that's a massive improvement.

Re: Broadband speed issues

Yes, I'll just use this hub unless there is a reason why I shouldn't.  But considering there is a 3 fold increase in download speed, I don't see that I have a choice.
