Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

Does your socket have a BT logo on it and is there more than one wire connected to each connector
You could even attach a photo of the internals to your post

No logo on it. Exactly as the picture here http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/images/LJU2_front.jpg

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

In which case it hasn't been installed by BT and isn't (shouldn't) be the master as the master is where the BT responsibility ends.

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

That's worrying for 2 reasons.
1. Not standard telephone cabling that I'm familiar with and the wired incorrectly, normal installation have the blue, blue/white wires on terminals 2 and 5.
2. The incoming cable only need 2 wires to be terminated. Are you sure that one of the cables is the incoming cable?

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

Update - I have found at the front of the property there is a grey box with a BT logo on it. This is where the line seems to come into the house. Any idea what it is? Is this something I need to open up?

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

The master should be the otherside of the wall. But again I'm concerned as there is a cable coming out at the bottom of the trunking through the wall

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

I can't see where the cable goes to from this grey box. On the other side of the wall is my downstairs toilet, and there is no socket in there.

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

Okay. Let assume that there is only 1 cable coming into the house, which is the one leaving the trunking at the bottom and this cable is going to the socket which you believe is the master. One tip to improve speed is to remove the ring wire. In you case it will be the 2 blue wires going to terminal 3. You can read about it here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

You said you have the router plugged in to what you believe is the master socket; is there anything plugged in to the other sockets?

Would I need to remove the ring wire on just the master socket, or on all sockets?

Re: Slow speed - nearer exchange?

Usually only at the master but in your case I would remove it from all the sockets as it can't hurt and may help

Q  (I live on a development of 6 houses on a new build development)
Have you asked your neighbours about their master socket, and where they plug in their broadband

OK I've disconnected the bell wire on the master socket. Seems to have increased the reported down bandwith reported on my router stats to 2,560 kbps (it was 1280 kbps before) . Fingers crossed my IP profile gets bumped up now! Cheesy
