This is despite you (pn) always asking for the pcap ( which of course I had in hand, albeit in ram ).
Sorry about that. I can now see how it would have been useful. Next time it happens, I will try harder ...
Really appreciate the explaination, Dave.
Oh, and in answer to your question ....
Quote from: dave Again in a high demand situation would you rather have your MS Updates come down a bit slower to ensure that you can watch the football on Sky?
my answer would be yes ... (particular streaming example aside)

It had been running solidly ( on a 3600 kbps HD stream) for nearly 2 hours and then seemed to run out of puff again.
Time: around 2130
Gateway: pcl-ag06
Duration: 10 mins or so
Souce of Stream: netflix server 92.122.213.153
Differentiated services field : 0x80
I have the pcap this time ( its big ) so if you need it let me know ...
( I appreciate that this really isn't the correct thread for this, as its obviously not a pure prioritisation issue .
I will start a new thread next time ... )

My netflix viewing is on a HTPC in the lounge, and as with all things, you can never be 100% sure that it might not be the culprit.
When it pauses streaming badly, or falls back to a horrible netflix quality level, I stop it, and run up netflix on a 2nd pc, with wireshark installed.
If this 2nd client shows a bitrate problem (via the Sliverlight diagnostics), I think its fair game for a slowdown report.
If it doesn't , then the HTPC could be the suspect in this case, or of course the slowdown could have been a very short blip
However, this scenario hasn't happened yet. The 2nd pc always reflects what the htpc sees (so far) ...

Sorry - my post was a bit too concise for its own good
What I meant was that my line speed was as per normal (8Mb max) , and I normally can stream HD from netflix with no problems at all.
Last night, however, something upstream of me was either running out of puff, or the stream was being incorrectly traffic managed ...

Have you recently started using Netflix? We're in the middle of upgrading our traffic management platform; our old platform on one or two of our older products doesn't correctly identify Netflix and you might see issues in the evening. It works fine on the new traffic management platform, it's just a the old one that's affected. If you disconnect and reconnect and hit one of these gateways:
pcl-ag03, pcl-ag04, pcl-ag05, ptw-ag01, ptw-ag02, ptw-ag03
It should then work fine. The rest of the network is being moved across in stages to the new platform so it should be fine everywhere once we've finished across all products.
