I am happy with 8.1, got a nice start menu and it works more or less like Windows 7. I tried Windows 10 as a insider for a while. I am certainly not in a rush to update and certainly hate the spying part of it.
Saying that Windows 7 and 8.1 is getting like that with a few of the updates, so they have gone now and been hidden.l

The previous issue of Computeractive magazine (number 458) has an article about the 'spyware' in Windows 10, they claim it is so that Cortana will work efficiently only if it knows all your likes/dislikes, searches etc.
The magazine lists the steps needed on installation of W10 to shut the spyware down, but Cortana won't work if you do!
But at least you have a choice, I don't know if this works or not as I am, and will remain, on Windows 7 until I feel W10 is sorted.
Nothing was mentioned about it affecting W7 as yet!!!

BTW, on the link, further on, there is an additional list of update KBs. Worth checking that because --
Re - Windows 7
Checked my installs and found 'em all - going back to 2014. And about 3 since Aug.
Uninstalled all of them. Restart at end. No problems. No unpleasant effects.
3 pending on my list, so unchecked them before installing latest updates.
Thanks for that! V interesting forum.
PS. Some of the things this telemetry gets up to is... considerable undesireable, btw.
Edit -
Nearly forgot -
there are some IPs mentioned on that forum
CIDR 65.52.0.0/14
CIDR 134.170.0.0/16
Don't block these unless you want Windows Updates to cease altogether!!!
