Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

Brand new tv today !... JVC LT-43CR330   with ROKU installed. Update downloaded and installed.TV working fine.

Want to screen cast from my laptop... possibly tablet ( android )  and my phone Huawei Y6 2019 ( android ) .

Trying to get the phone to work first as a "starter" to get the others working later on.

Tried several different "apps" from Google Play Store, all supposed to work with ROKU tv`s. but the tv does not show any device on screen mirrroing.

Both phone and tv are on the same router via wifi connection.

Laptop is running Linux mint 21 victoria..  most of the info I have searched and found on google searches refer to windows or MAC..

Have tried using VLC... from these instructions.....

vlc screen mirroring steps 01.png

(while it was written for Debian 11 desktop... I would assume that it would show my Linux mint desktop or whatever from the list of available devices)

Again... as already mentioned... no devices are shoing on the ROKU device listing

Any step by step help, including recommended software etc, would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@Mav  Scrolled thru that video, to the Android bit at the end, and it seemsto show the need for a "dongle" called "chromecast" ( the orange disk thing, at the back ot fhe TV....

I thought it was similar to "paring"  a Phone to a Laptop... without the need for further hardware.  ? ? ? ? using a "screencast app/software ? ? ? ? Of which there are many on the "playstore" listings.

Android should have the screen mirroring built in https://support.roku.com/en-gb/article/208754928 as should Windows. Not sure about Linux...

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@MisterW  & @Mav

OK... thanks for input... have made some progress...

Cheesy

As for screen mirroring... have managed to get the phone to screencast to the jvc telly... Last night, I downloaded three screenmirror/screencast apps, but they never seemed to work... tonight. I tried one SMARTVIEW  and it showed the JVC tv... and a coupld of others..(probably the neighbours! )

Accepted the request and  that bit  "cast" a music video from the phone to the telly.... the video quality was not very good.   probably because it "mirrors" the small  6"phone screen on to a 43" telly screen.

So will see about other apps to download to the phone..

Been doing some more google research regarding Linux Laptop to TV screencasting... seems that there is something called GNOME NETWORK DISPLAYS. so I installed that...

Also installed PIPEWIRE AND WIREPLUMBER , and it ( NETWORK DISPLAYS on  the Laptop )  shows the 43" JVC Roku TV  and then proceeds to try and connect....but fails ann d just shows "Error" (which is not much help! )  for some reason...

have re-booted, and tried again, but does not "connect". Also re-started the telly .

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@shutter

Are you getting anywhere with this?

Casting to a Roku STB, I have been able to cast from a Windows 11 PC, plus a couple of android devices. With Mint version you are using I have only been successful using Google Chrome. from I can see there is a limited number of video/audio sites that can be cast, I've no idea who is on the list. You Tube worked.

I found references to use HDMI cable instead, which is really not that helpful!

Have you tried casting from a Windows app within Wine? Be careful I'm sure you don't want to do another platform build!

If I have time tomorrow I will try Wine

Dan.

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@Dan_the_Van

The only progress I have made, is that I have managed to Screen Mirror, from my phone to the tv. as mentioned.

As for your suggestions, I agree, 98% of queries to Google, regarding using Linux end up quoting how they did it using Windows.

Somehow, I don`t think that WINE would be any good with that, But..... if I get desperate, I may try that route, or just open a bottle instead ! ! .Grin

I have found a .deb install that "may" work... called Deskreen. and now after emmerdale finishes, I shall give that a go, and see what happens.

As a point of interest... this is not an "imperative" "must do". thing... it is just something that I have had in mind for a few years, and now I have the telly that can do it, I thought I would give it a go, to keep up with modern tech issues !.

As a "secondary" thought, I wonder if using a "bluetooth dongle" plugged in to the USB slot on the telly, would work.Again, this will/may be another route to try. Just for fun !.

Updates on this WILL be posted,

Thanks

Screen mirroring normally works over wifi not Bluetooth!

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@Dan_the_Van       Update .....

Well, it appears that Deskreen requires the (my term) "receving screen" to have a web browser, so you can type in a URL...

As my JVC ROKU TV does not seem to have this facility, having checked all the "settings" listed. Deskreen will not work for me in this situation.

@MisterW  Yes, I understand that, but having done a few queries on Google search, about sending video via Bluetooth, it seems that it "might" work.... ( so long as both "sender" and "receiver" have the same version of Bluetooth,) Which currently, I think, is Bluetooth v5.

The main problem seems to be that the TV recognises the mobile phone, but does not recognise the laptop so the GNOME NETWORK DISPLAY, doesn`t work for me...

Maybe I am not doing something right..Although from the screen shots in my previous, there is little for me to do, except wait until the little curly cursor stops spinning and says  ERROR. ( which does not help me at all!! ! ! )

I am stumbling around, There does not seem to be a "noddy`s guide" for doing this.

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

Here's,some info on gnome network display https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-network-displays

Apparently the Roku tv does support miracast so it might work.

Good luck....

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@MisterW  Thanks for looking that up... but it seems WAaaaaaay above my level.. I haven`t a clue what to do with it, '

I have messed up my desktop by doing some terminal installs that I thought "might" be appropriate, and now I have lost my "Mint" MATE desktop, instead I have a blackscreen with a very thing "panel" ( taskbar ) at the top of the screen, with the Linux Mint logo in the centre of the blackscreen... it opens with my name, and then I have to insert my password to get a similar screen with Activities in the top left corner  the date in the centre of the top bar, and wifi and speaker in the top right corner.

bottom centre there is a small square pad ( like a phone button ) that brings up all my apps in icons...  totally confusing, and haven`t a clue how it got there, nor how to "get rid" back to my Mate desktop.

Will probably have to revert to my small laptop HDD  cloned version and transfer files and folders to update it from this HDD

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

Update.

Downloaded VLC to my Windows folder, and installed it on my Linux Mint, through WINE...  VLC works as expected playing music videos on the laptop.... BUT... the "casting" bit does not "connect" or "show" a request, on the ROKU tv... so no progress on that route

I also installed the download on my Virtual Box Windows 7 Professional... but again... it did not work on the ROKU  tv.

My "normal" Video Player on Linux Mint is SMPlayer, which is excellent... has good Equalizer and video output.  It also has a "cast" item in the menu,.... but it is limited choice to either "Chromecast" or to a mobile phone or tablet.   No mention of TV.

I do not have a "Chromecast" dongle, so that did not work either !..

I am surprised that the Linux Community  (forum members & developers) have not come up with a "simple" solution to this problem. Most of the stuff I have found in research, does not work, or is so complicated on the "build" of some code that an error is easy to make and ( to a novice like me) is like trying to learn a defunt south american native language. Certainly not easy to spot any mistake as the cause of stuff not working "as expected" on completion of coding. so all the work becomes so much wasted effort and time.

Any one with further "easy to follow" step by step instructions that I could try, will be welcome... (and give me something to play around with )

Cheers

Re: Screencasting/Screen mirroring on JVC ROKU tv

@shutter

Using a PC running Mint 21.2 (not a virtual system) with no additional software installed I have found the following using google chrome only.

Chromecast dongle - I can cast everything that is viewed in the browser

Roku STB - On the 'Cast tab' against Roku there is comment "Available for specific video sites"

With both of the above closing google chrome ended the casting session.
