And the fact that the 582n gives good diagnostics and as posted before, mine has been up for 108 days on a 3km line with it's broadcom chipset of course means it's a load of junk
It has it's bugs yes, but it's a budget modem/router and as such it ain't that bad.
I'm glad one user thinks the 2704n appears to be better, I look forward to other users experiences in due course, especially from those that can give more constructive detailed comparisons.

OK - so I got the "new" router today - Plus Net's previousl attempt to send a replacement one out ended up me getting a Thompson DSL one.
So, first impressions - it has wall screw mounting holes, but these are impossible to use with any LAN cables in - it does have a right angle power thingy.
And secondly, the dumbed down firmware has a nice and easy option to switch to OpenDNS (good) but no option to fix client IP addresses - or am I missing something
(sorry if already been raised - I will read the backlog sometime, promise)

Re the fixed IP address

Mmm. That'll be 3 90 degree connectors for me. So maybe the hole in the wall is the thing to do.

use longer screws with some on spacer pads to the router body, it will make it easier to get the cables in/out require far less effort and the router will still be wall mounted
you can either buy some sticky back foam pads or just cut some up and use a bit of sticky tape to hold them in place (I used four bits of a high density foam block and a bit of double sided sticky tape) since you don't want it wobbling on the screw heads I placed my "mod" on my router over the existing feet just to give it that little bit extra room, oddly since there is an air vent on the bottom of the router it also made it more stable in daily operation

For information
To add spacers with enough room to insert a standard RJ45 plug with the wire tightly bent would require 1.5" to 2" spacers depending on the plug

That's quite a spacer - thicker than the actual router - even getting this thing to stand up is an issue with 3 decent network cables into it the cables tend to excert their will over where the router ends up
I'll experiment.
There's no reason why I can't put the router at the end of the 7 m lan cable that current attaches PC to router is there?

Assuming that you are on fibre and you are talking about connecting the modem to the router - no reason at all

Ta - so I wonder what's best for me WiFis?  Router in window bay on one side of house, or router more central in the house, but in "cupboard under the stairs" - (as was) now converted to PC alcove, so no doors.  Interesting.  Should reduce signal, a bit, for main living room, but boost it for upstairs.

depends on more than where its located,
I used to have one at the last house mounted on the stair wall (just proud of the alcove) poor wifi all round the house, even if bedroom /lounge doors were open, that place was a quick up concrete prefab with more daylight/air gaps than solid corners....
on the other hand I have currently got perfect wifi all round the house having my router located in one corner of the lounge even when the doors are closed the signal gets to the 3rd floor rooms without issue, but in fairness the walls here are filled with those foam blocks that have silver paper on the one side to reflect the heat back into the building instead of letting it escape out,
so perhaps the signal is getting reflected back as well instead of being lost through the walls (I cant pick up the wifi unless I'm stood in front of a window when outside) of course that could be down to the fact his is a timber framed brick clad "eco house" even the roof tiles are composite materials ....

so to wall mount the router with the mounting holes ,,, requires either a 2" spacer or a 2" hole in your wall mmmmmmmmmmm not so good

I find the new 2704n to be slightly better for me WiFi wise, I tested both routers in the same position last week and was surprised to find the 2704n came out on average about 10mb/s faster. Both routers were upstairs 1 floor up behind a chimney breast with my mac-book pro downstairs on the kitchen table, I tested both 5 times each. I can't live with the router in that position though speed wise so I have an AP in the loft and another AP in the living room which works  very well for me.
As for standing up, yeah it's a bit wobbly with 4 cables in.

Ok what are the best optimised settings for this router so I can start tweaking?
Also cant see a option to change the router password  Huh?
