Ever since I posted about Bing Maps becoming less than useful, I have been using Streetmap, but for the last two weeks or so I have been unable to get it. Has any other person had problems too. When I try, it times out
Thankyou for any help

I use it a lot, but probably not in the last fortnight.
It's currently timing out for me too. Really hoping it's a temporary problem!

Street map has been in legal battles for years with Google which they appear to have lost. One wonders if they have finally bitten the dust. I’ve also read of issues related to licensing changes in respect of OS maps.
Ironically in response to “has streetmap uk closed down?” Google AI reports…
Streetmap.co.uk has effectively ceased operations, though not with a formal "closed down" announcement, as users on forums noted it was down and unavailable recently (January 2026), following its previous legal battles with Google and a shift away from detailed Ordnance Survey (OS) mapping, with users now turning to alternatives like Promap for detailed OS maps.

Firstly, I have no idea why Google would or could become an "interested party" in this. I'd be interested whether anyone has any clue Google think they need to be involved.
Secondly. Streetmap haven't been using the latest OS mapping since several years. The irriating fact for me is that I have an extensive collection of OS (paper-based) maps. Which also enables me to check what version of data Streetmap is providing. (Yup, they are/were serving up out-of-date stuff.)
Farewell the humour associated with features on OS maps (I won't post directly because some will fall foul of filters)
However, attached is a .txt file with Streetmap URLs (which have embedded grid references, so finding them on paper maps isn't impossible).

Slightly disappointed to see no mention of Lord Hereford's Knob (YouTube - grid ref in lyrics)

Just do the research …
I guess your mindset is in the space of Google suing Street map, but that would be wrong. There is though no affirmative statement that the service has closed but just inference in that it is and has remained off air.

Streetmap lost a case with Google about a decade ago. So google did. Streetmap stayed up in the meantime.
Therefore the Google AI response is rather uninformative, and may be withholding details.

That's on th borders of Wales and England. Pratts Bottom is near to where I grew up.
Well, there is the translations from Gaelic which were edited by Victorians "north of the border". The Devils's winkle?

Actually Streetmap sued Google and lost. https://www.simmons-simmons.com/publications/ck0aoac8gnhl40b33aunrcktm/03-streetmap-fails-in-private...

Yes. I know.
The courts agreed with Google. The Big Boys have to be cut their slack. Whether that was a good decision is (still) debatable. Legal stuff is quite often behind the curve when it comes to the digital world.
In any case, the Google AI answer you found still doesn't provide a reason or answer, does it?
Perhaps OS have clamped down.
I know they (OS) provide a Smart Phone app for digital access to the map data when you go and buy a physical hardcopy. What they *don't* do is think outside the "everyone has a Smart Phone" box. (A common and rather widespread problem IMO). I encountered during this mode of thought during COVID lockdowns. Turn up for testing, Smart Phone required. Otherwise it was a postal delivery of a testing kit.
I bought a rather basic alarm clock recently. Access to documentation on whatever additional features it may have had was locked away behind a graphic which was of no use to someone without a so-called "smart phone".

I suggest that the Google AI is simply presenting a digest of the information available: the service is off air; there has not been an announcement; there’s a history of lost legal battles; OS have changed their licensing agreements. That all points to a folded operation.
Indeed a fat app for everything is indeed not the right strategy when a single web browser could do everything … unless there is a requirement for full functionality / operation with no network connection.
The irony is that very few fat apps can function off line at all.

Sadly it seems Streetmap has disappeared. Shame, because its use of the familier 25k and 50k UK maps was a real bonus as well as the 250k maps for route planning. I used it for over 20years for my survey business in order to locate customers.

Other info.
Back to 25 Apr 2023
This URL was present at the website of streetmap.co.uk
https://streetmap.co.uk/home/domainsale
The domain is still up (it still has an IP) and will seemingly be there as a registered domain for some years.
Perhaps that is a little bit better than Google AI?
