Accessing 192.168.1.254

Yesterday I had cause to try to log onto the Member Centre, but I haven't done that for many years so had forgotten my username and/or my password (in case they were different to logging on here). Nothing I tried worked. Fortunately, I had the Plusnet Helpdesk phone number. They fairly quickly set me up with my username and gave me a temporary password. Having this, I went into the Member Centre, and while I was there, I set my password to what I wanted, rather than what Plusnet gave me (no offence intended, Plusnet). So far, so good.

Today I tried to access the internet and failed. I couldn't get past my router. I phoned the helpdesk  again, and they took me through going into 192.168.1.254, and I was able to log in to plusdsl.net using my new password. That fixed the problem at the router, so I had access to the internet again (hooray).

I thought, just in case, I should write a description of what I had done today, so I could reference it in the distant future. I cannot get into whatever 192.168.1.254 allowed me to do earlier.

Would someone please remind me what the steps are up to and including 192.168.1.254 (is it that I have the wrong address?).

Thanks for your help

Is this for accessing the router, or your Members Centre, @penneck - they are two completely different things?

Re: Accessing 192.168.1.254

Hello @jab1 ,

The router problem was caused by my changing the password used by Member Centre. This also causes the password required by the router to connect to plusdsl.net (the connection from the router to the internet) to change - both Member Centre and Plusdsl.net use the same password. I didn't realise that yesterday because at that time I was still logged into plusdsl.net in spite of the password change.

This morning when I tried to use my computer, however, was a different matter. My router tried to log into plusdsl.net with the old password, but plusdsl expected the new password. I could log into my router, that isnt a problem. The helpdesk took me through the 192.168.1.254 path and got the internet connection working. Later, I tried to write a description of that process and then testing it, but when I tested it, it wouldn't access 192.168.1.254. I have either forgotten something, or something is preventing me accessing it.

The process as I remember it is:-

1. Open my web browser (I'm using Google Chrome - or is that not a web browser?);

2. Type 192.168.1.254<Enter> in the top line of the browser.

It is at this point the process breaks down.

Any ideas, please?

Re: Accessing 192.168.1.254

@penneck

The actual pages that you need to access are dependant on which hub you have but basically:

1. Enter 192.168.1.254 in the Address field of your browser. If you have a Search box installed by a browser then do not use this.

2. Log into your hub using the admin password on the label. Go to the hub advanced settings page, probably one labelled Broadband or something similar.

3. Select Disconnect or take out the DSL cable.

4. Enter/check the Usename (followed by @plusdsl.net) and Password.

5. Click Save if you have the option in your hub.

6. Plug the DSL cable back in and/or select Connect.

Re: Accessing 192.168.1.254

Hello @Baldrick1 ,

I assume the top line just below the tab on the Google Chrome browser is the Address field you mention. I type in 192.168.1.254 in that. When I hit the Enter button, it puts http:// in front of the 192, spends several seconds doing whatever it does, then comes back with a message that 192.168.1.254 hasn't responded in time, try checking the connection, etc.

Try clearing your browser cache or another browser.

Re: Accessing 192.168.1.254

I've tried using Microsoft Edge but same result - not responding in time. As for clearing my browser cache, I've never ever done that so I will have to find out how to do it.

@Baldrick1

What ever I've done to clear the Google Chrome browser cache, I've ended up deleting all but one of the icons that would be on the Chrome home page just below the word Google. They were useful. How do I get them back? Fortunately, I still have the bookmarks.

Re: Accessing 192.168.1.254

You can't get those quick links back - the browser remembers them from your visiting history. Once you wipe it, the browser has nothing left to recommend on those quick links. Act in haste n all that..

IF it's the plusnet hubone router you're using, then 192.168.1.254 frequently stops responding (happened to me last week). It's a bug with the routers that appears not to be on the fix list. Sometimes it will sort itself out after a few hours and start working, other times it simply won't and you'll have to reboot the router instead. Once it's back up, you should be able to get back into the admin panel.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Accessing 192.168.1.254

I've recovered from losing those icons, so as far as I am concerned, this post is closed.

Thanks to all for your help
