AVG Free

I have used AVG anti virus free edition for many yeard and been happy with it. I updated to their latest version recently and have noticed a problem.

In previos versions AVG Free would automatically scan the computer  at certain times that you could select. The latest version doesn't scan until you tell it to.

Is it possible to set the latest version, 17.4.3014, to scan automatically?

.

Re: AVG Free

According to the link below ,you can still schedule scans , but the user interface will only show last scan run , for scans when  you manually click "scan computer "

https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000DqlAAAS

There should be a cog wheel that you can select to set up a  scheduled scan

Re: AVG Free

In my opinion AVG has got more and more cumbersome over the years and more and more prone to try to sell you both extraneous other software and itself.  If it's playing-up at present then maybe it's time to look at other options?

Re: AVG Free

I scrapped AVG for very reasons mentioned, I now use Avast.

Re: AVG Free

I can't schedule a scan - even tho' it says there is a schedule it doesn't carry it out. I've been seriously thinking of binning it.

Re: AVG Free

As many here (including myself) have attested to using Microsoft Security Essentials (Defender) along with Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D and CCleaner gives just about all the protection you need on an Windows machine.

Re: AVG Free

As @Pete11 says, scrapped AVG years ago. The interface was very basic looking, it didn't pick up on a few things I deliberately left on my drives to test it and frankly, I was never completely sold that it would detect anything at all yet alone defend against incoming virii.

See my other thread about using my own HDD. MSE was responsible for that - using over 1GB of ram and continually using the HDD for around 20 minutes preventing me even logging in.

MS are ok* at operating systems but anything else they tend to be pretty basic with unless its a separate commercial offering that they charge for and then it's decent**

**still debateable

Like others, I now use avast.

Re: AVG Free

Thanks guys for all the comments. If I get rid of AVG what is the best free antivirus available? I see Avast mentioned. Are there any others?

@7up I have been using MSE for over 8 years and have never met with the issues you mentioned. Maybe just bad luck?

I have installed Avast on lots of machines, and is the one i use. i would also recommend the free versions of Avira and Bitdefender

Re: AVG Free

I have been looking at the following site:

https://www.top10bestantivirus.com/best-free-antivirus

I wonder if anybody has comments about Total AV, PC Protect or ScanGuard. They all come out well and are free.

I've used nod32 for a while. Not free but there are a few trial offers around.

Re: AVG Free

Nod32 (ESET) has gone badly downhill in recent years

These are a couple of respectable test sites https://www.av-comparatives.org/dynamic-tests/ and https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/ and I would suggest that the dynamic tests from av-comparatives is the best reference

this is the latest chart
