Is there any any reason why that might be the case ?

Yes.  IPs are allocated to your local BT BRAS in small chunks and as BT map you to a single BRAS then you only have that selection to 'pick' from.

Hi Paul , I refer to  your reply to Nibiru question on behalf of my original post, and thank you for it.  Just to add  some details, since I was moved onto this new platform (or network) early this month the majority of my IP allocations have the same three groups of numbers from the left  (e.g 51.9.127.xxx) and only the last  three digits xxx change in the range 000 to 255, but also  for  just a few times I  got  another different group of IP addresses ( e.g 143.159.174.xxx )  so I assume there only just  these two activeIP address groups on my local BT exchange at the moment . would you happen to know how quickly this new network roll out will be so that more groups of IP numbers become available to me. also would you please explain for this new network why sometimes more than others it is harder to change from any givern IP address, when i try to switch the router off/on for an hour or so or do a soft disconnect from the router console page? Regards
Chris

Re: Plusnet - New Network

Interesting, at 6:14 on 23/3/16 my gateway moved from
lo0-central10.ptw-ag01.plus.net
to
206.core.plus.net
Don't think I've seen a core gateway before, stlighly different sub net, but still on 195.166.0.0/16
Is this a sign that I moved? Not that it made any difference to my connection ....

Re: Plusnet - New Network

I don't think so. I think it's just missing/incorrect rDNS for the virtual router you're connected to.

Re: Plusnet - New Network

Yes did seem a bit strange to be on a core.plus.net - the IP if you need to correct is 195.166.130.206, looks like the whole of 195.166.130.0/24 is in core.plus.net.

Re: Plusnet - New Network

With all these things, as Bob has already mentioned, if the rDNS entries are missing/incorrect, then the Gateway will not be identified in the manner that we are used to.

Re: Plusnet - New Network

Just happened to have a look at the BT availability checker for my line and noted the following comment:-

There is currently a Broadband cease pending or in progress against this line. This cease is due to complete by 13th April 2016. This will not stop you ordering Broadband from a new supplier, but it will delay the provision of the new Broadband service.

Is this to do with moving to the new network? I seem to remember in the early days some people receiving texts saying their lines were being ceased.

Re: Plusnet - New Network

I'm pretty sure you're correct in that assumption.
My phone number has also got this notice on the BT availability checker, and the date is the same as the one I've been given for my move to the new network.

I recall you saying you're in Newcastle upon Tyne. Same as me.
Will have a look on checker to see if same for me  Undecided

If you are not on a fixed IP it is easy - your tracerts will change significantly.
For those on a fixed IP where the tracert doesn't change I'm wondering if the CHAP challenges in the router logs will change - I'm currently seeing this:
Quote
Apr 4 07:34:52 PPP CHAP Receive challenge from rhost JUNOS (Internet)
Apr 4 07:34:51 PPP CHAP Receive challenge from rhost bras-red2.sl (Internet)
