Yesterday America spoke and re-elected President Barack Obama. In an election that few would dare to predict the outcome, interest was high here in Blighty just as it was over the Pond. Read on to find out what impact this had on the Plusnet broadband network ... Overnight streaming on our network is relatively low; most people are asleep so we don't see a lot of traffic and while we weren't expecting a massive surge in demand for the election, there was probably twice as much streaming as normal. There was also slightly more traffic in the early morning "peak" than normal, (we usually already see a peak during term time on week days from what we think is kids watching YouTube before going to school).
This is a similar pattern to
what we saw four years ago. There's just a lot more traffic now as more people will stream rather than put the TV or radio on for news and entertainment.
We can only guess how many people stayed up all night using their Plusnet broadband to keep track of events, but it's probably somewhere around 0.5% of our customer base.
