Sometimes the faceplate does not always click securely into place which causes a poor connection between the two, resulting in a drop in speed.

You can buy new ones on amazon or ebay if you want.

I'm confident that it was properly in position, so I've just ordered a new one from Amazon.

Thanks to you and everyone else for helping me track down the problem.

It would be interesting to know if the new cable works in the filter, then it would indicated that how the plug end is constructed it is not compatible fitting into the data port of the BT socket correctly, If you feel brave give it a try (won`t do any harm)

I agree it would be interesting and I'd like to know the answer. But I don't think I feel brave enough to try it tonight, now that everything is up and running properly. I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back.

Thanks for the thought.

It didn't.  And sadly it still didn't work when plugged into a replacement Mk 4 faceplate: the router showed a steady light for around two minutes, followed by the same flashing lights as before. I waited for ten minutes to see if the signal would stabilise, but it didn't happen.

Reverting to the original cable, the connection was re-established in a couple of minutes, at my usual speeds.

So, either the new cable is damaged or the crossed wires do actually matter.

Thanks again for all the thoughts and suggestions.

Re: Advice welcomed: am I trying the correct cable?

An update:

I was able to try the BT box - Hub 2 connection with a new cable: it worked perfectly. This means I can go ahead with relocating the router if I decide to pursue the original plan.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.
