Re: Upgrade from ADSL to VDSL didn't happen on the indicated day - how to chase

Indeed. Yes.  Shouldn't be focussing on cabinet instance for ADSL.  Sloppy of me to suggest that was a reliable indicator for VDSL. 😁 It should be even better only measuring to the Cabinet for VDSL.  But getting something really good all the way to the exchange is good news i.e. that's my worst case line distance.  VDSL cabinet is showing as only 242m away...

I've got the Official Hub Two router plumbed in at the moment so that it will auto-configure to the VDSL PPOE credentials when it goes live and I haven't found any line stats in the UI, but on another router I was showing about 9db Downstream SNR with full (ADSL 2+) sync speed, and of course no measurement of higher frequency bins for VDSL.  So my reasoning was that this is a lot of SNR margin above the 6db target so should be a good indicator for VDSL sync speeds (decibels being an exponential scale, that 3db difference means that I have twice the SNR required to sync at full ADSL speeds all the way to the exchange).

Unless that line has some nasty higher frequency attenuation or noise, its should be very nice for VDSL - we shall see!

Yes line power/attenuation matters but I should have explained that the line has synced at full speed and so SNR is an indicator of the margin on the line with power etc. automatically wound back.  i.e. the wick is turned down but it still has twice the SNR margin it needs even when capped to full ADSL2+ sync speeds = nice clean line

Hub Two detailed stats can be found in the advanced section - technical log.

Re: Upgrade from ADSL to VDSL didn't happen on the indicated day - how to chase

Just checked back and the order's not yet cancelled so I've chased this up with our suppliers helpdesk. The agent's escalated this to their relevant team and I've been given a review date of the 31st October.

I'll ask one of my colleagues to follow up then as I'm moving on to a different department at Plusnet after this weekend. Smiley

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Upgrade from ADSL to VDSL didn't happen on the indicated day - how to chase

Just to round this up, my upgrade finally went through on Tuesday after several abortive visits by Openreach engineers.

The customer support on Plusnet has been excellent throughout.  And indeed the Openreach engineers as ever, are charming, knowledgeable and helpful. It is just a shame that they had to visit the site so many times until the database and job sheets tied up with the physical reality on the ground!

Attainable speeds, (it's still training), are 23Mbps upstream and 72.5Mbps downstream. So a huge improvement on my old ADSL... I feel like I've finally entered the 21st century😁

Awesome! That's what we like to hear. Just to let you know, the 21st Century isn't all it's cracked up to be. We have had a pandemic and everyone is stuck to their phones. haha. Let us know if you need anything else @albany

23mbps US?

I'd check that speed tester!!  The product is 80/20 so 23mbps DATA speed is 10% more than the line sync speed.  You appear to hyper drive (travels faster than light) data transfer US!

The OP did say attainable so more than feasible.

Indeed he did say "attainable" 😁

VDSL will go much higher than 20 Mbps US e.g. on a 35b profile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDSL#Profiles which is capable (theoretically!) of 300/100.

We just don't implement more than 17a in the UK, and we cap it at 80/20 - the profile is capable of 150/50.  But modems will frequently report much higher attainable rates than 80/20, on a good line.  I had an HG612 on a line in a previous house which regularly and reliably reported attainable rates of 99/39.  But of course it always synced at its capped maximum of 80/20 and not a jot more.

Once the DSLAM starts to apply some noise correcting trickery to my line, I'm hopeful that I will just about squeeze an 80Mbps sync out of this line. We shall see...
