FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

We were due to have FFTP installed recently. Inspite telling the agent when it was booked that there is a flat roof and the outside box would need to be installed above this flat roof (onto the house wall) the installer that arrived said they cant do the install as not allowed to stand on a flat roof (but happy to go up a ladder to gutter height !!)  Any one else had this issue and a way round it?

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

Flat roofs are notorious for leaking which is why the installer won’t go on it!

It’s not just Openreach and their sub-contractors. Installers like Sky won’t install satellite dishes where the access means going on to a flat roof.

It’s the old story ‘It was Ok before you touched it’ (in this case walked across it)

You may well think your roof is ok but suppose it starts to leak in a few weeks or months are you going to blame the installer?

In any event the splice point needs to be at ground level (In almost all cases) in order to splice the cable leading to the ONT.

As regards a way around it, it depends on the particular location etc, what did the installer suggest?

@Golfman

I assume a specialst team will be assigned to the job.

If and when they visit again you could always ask if they've got one of these in their van. Does away with the external box apparantly.

Is this what you have then?

Would be a much better option

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

installer sugested running cable from pole to top corner of house (following where BT line is) then routing right down frount wall of house around a porch to ground level...fitting the splice box then running cable back up again to the top corner where the cable has to go through wall. He is happy to work on the ladder to route the cable but not do the outside box as he has to use the tooling to do the splice so thats why normally done at ground level. As I originaly posted if they are happy to stand on flat roof then can all be done from there.

He also sai dhe thinks with the routing he suggested may be to long for the cable anyway.......so unless they agree about the roof etc looks like no fibre from plusnet....

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

@Golfman

I wish. My installation was done way back in late 2017 with a 4 port ONT and an external back up power unit.

The pictures are from a recent post by a user in NI (I believe) who had an install recently. They stated the boxes were rarer than hens teeth and were on back order.

Edit : For your information the box is attached to the old wall socket for the Master Socket. The fibre was brought in using the original cable entry and then stripped back. The splice would have been done indoors.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

@Golfman

It is for OR to find a solution. If they don't, you won't get FTTP from any ISP who uses OR. I would copy the pictures I just posted so you have them on hand if you speak to OR in the future.

Is there any message post under My Order in your PN Members page? A survey might have been ordered.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

@bmc

I also read this post. My interpretation of it was that it was not this 1+1 box that eliminated the need for a CSP. My assumption was that the customer had an underground duct that emerged in a recessed wall box. The installer spliced the external and internal fibres as normal but housed the splice in the recessed box rather than fitting a CSP, then fixed the 1+1 box shown on the picture over the top.

@Golfman

Is there a reason why you can’t install the ONT at a lower level then run an Ethernet cable to your chosen router location? Obviously, for example, if you live in an upstairs flat.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

@Baldrick1

You appear to be correct. From another post by "Bella123"

Its a rural area, the existing comes underground from the pole on the roadside, under tarred drive, under the subfloor to phone socket in hallway.

However, if the installer has a box handy then it would solve the OP's installation problem.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

@bmc

The point I’m trying to make is that if the installer could be persuaded to install an internal CSP then there’s no need for this box.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

Technically I don't think so but looks ugly having box and cables running up and down the front of the house.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

@Golfman

The other option is to persuade the installer to splice the fibre indoors. There no reason why it can’t be done.

Re: FFTP Installation problems with flat roof!!

Hi

Just to update....Kelly Coms (subcontracted to openreach) wouldnt go on the flat roof, even though it was told about before they were booked. Rescheduled for openreach who came a week later. Flat roof trained, however said was to much off an angle for the ladder !!!!!  However, made a call and within 20 minutes a lorry with hydraulic basket turned up. Conected to the pole and drilled the hole in house wall (up near gutters.) As previously suggested they installed everything inside the house, with a splice joint and the usual inside box. Lovely installers and all done very quickly. I have my own modem/router which connected straight away with speed test consistently at 315 (contract is 300). So far very stable .

So it can be done and all conections on the iside if required (actualy much neater)
