What has happed with my smart cap?

I got a notification to say my daughter used her smart cap tonight. Then I looked on her phone bill and it said she has used nearly £50 of data today. But I have a smart cap so she was supposed to be cut off after using that. Is there a glitch at the moment?

@Misstillyandme  Welcome to the Community forums.

What you should find if it's set up right is that you are not actually charged more than the Smart Cap limit. This is caused by the charging system not keeping up with the spend rate.

Re: What has happed with my smart cap?

As @Baldrick1 said, the on-line system doesn't stop the charges at the smart cap so reports the amount as if there wasn't a cap - which can be scary (my wife ran up a big bill last year switching her phone on in the USA). However, the actual amount charged at the end of the month will observe the smart cap - so don't panic.

It's a bad system, but since mobile is going away it won't get fixed.

Re: What has happed with my smart cap?

Plusnet wont see the usage immediately, so if you use a lot in a short period of time then these will continue to work.  Once Plusnet have the usage data, if the smart cap has been breached they'll apply the restrictions and as said, won't charge beyond the agreed smart cap amount.  I suspect @corringham US example would hit higher amounts for 2 reasons. 1) the unit price is higher and 2) its quite possible that the usage data would take longer to come through as there's the extra step of the roaming partner reporting it back to the UK network.

It's probably not possible to "fix" that part, though how it's reported on the Plusnet site and mobile app could certainly be better, though no worse than I've seen it with other providers with similar things.
