call by wifi Moto Edge 50 pro

Hi

the plusnet page says that call by wifi should work, the Motorola page says that it should work when supported by the provider, but I cannot find the option.

Moto support says to go Phone app, settings, calling accounts, click on the sim. There's 3 options there (fixed dialling numbers, call forwarding, additional settings, where the latter is caller ID and call waiting). No sight of "call by wifi".

any ideas?

thanks!

Which network are you on, and how old is the phone? Older phones, and some networks, do not support WiFi calling.

Re: call by wifi Moto Edge 50 pro

For my Samsung Android phone this would be :

Settings >>> Connections >>> Wi-Fi Calling   ( Slider to Enable / Disable )

Also from the Phone keypad,  "3 dot menu" >>> Settings >>> Wi-Fi Calling ( Slider to Enable / Disable )

@krthie

the Motorola page says that it should work when supported by the provider, but I cannot find the option.

If the option isnt there, then your mobile provider hasn't enabled 'wifi calling'

Wi-Fi Calling (incoming and outgoing) works just fine on my cheap and cheerful Moto g06 via the PN Hub 2 router. Am with Tesco Mobile.
Further thought: Are you on a contract or PAYG? I am PAYG, however it is only recently that Tesco allowed Wi-Fi Calling for PAYG customers. Perhaps check with your SP?

That is quite correct if:

  1. Your mobile network provider allows WiFi calling
  2. Your mobile phone supports the functionality

WiFi calling working or not working is not predicated in the ISP's provided service.  Consider...

  1. Plusnet provided internet service
  2. Plusnet provided mobile service on the EE network (as was)
  3. iPhone 14 pro

1 & 3 support WiFi calling but the Plusnet mobile service did not - result no WiFi calling functionality.

Change 2 to native EE and WiFi calling works.

WiFi calling requires that the mobile provider has call termination equipment which can be connected to over the internet. Who provides your mobile phone service?  Do they offer WiFi calling?

Re: call by wifi Moto Edge 50 pro

Hi all,

thanks for the help, I didn't realise this was tied up with my mobile service provider, which is giffgaff. It does support Wifi calling though, see What is WiFi calling and VoLTE? | giffgaff Help.

@jab1 asked about old phone. As it's a Meto Edge 50 pro, it's quite recent (maybe 1 year old).

I now saw quite a few other posts on the forum. Some of them mention the plusnet broadband firewall (Broadband Firewall), but I see this is set as OFF (maybe not such a good idea...).

So, I'm still stuck I'm afraid.

Re: call by wifi Moto Edge 50 pro

If you have followed the advice on the Giffgaff page...

Setting up WiFi and VoLTE calling
WiFi Calling
This'll be automatically enabled once your number has been migrated over so long as your phone has the correct firmware. You will need to turn it on in your phone settings:

iOS: Open Settings > Apps >Phone > WiFi Calling > Toggle ON

Android: Open Settings > Connections > WiFi Calling > Toggle ON

... and WiFi calling does not work, then I'd call Giffgaff support.

For the avoidance of doubt, how do you know its not working?

@krthie

To force your phone to use WiFi calling.

Put the phone in 'Airplane mode', ensure the WiFi connection is connected to your home network, hopefully the display will indicate Wifi calling

For my Android Pixel 7 pro in the call log I see this icon Screenshot 2026-01-30 155056.jpg against the caller name for WiFi calling calls.

Nice one - make sure that the mobile network access is inhibited!

... I know how to do that on an iPhone ... !!

Re: call by wifi Moto Edge 50 pro

Fix

Giffgaff can be a bit strange regarding wifi calling support!

For instance both my wifes Samsung A13 & my A15 5G work fine but the B-i-Ls A22 5G didnt ( no Wifi Calling option in menu )

Looking at the Giffgaff Samsung supported phones list https://help.giffgaff.com/en/articles/258841-what-is-wifi-calling-and-volte

Galaxy A04s, A05s, A13, A14, A15, A23, A24, A25, A33, A34, A35, A52, A53, A54, A55 and later

sure enough , the A22 is missing!

For Molorola the support list is VERY vague

Cancun

We are awaiting confirmation of when the new firmware that enables VoLTE and WiFi Calling on these devices will be available.

So if the phone doesnt show the option, then it seems Giffgaff dont support wifi calling on that phone

If WiFi calling doesn't show when following that route, try opening the Phone app, make sure 'Keypad' is selected, then tap the ' '3 dots' top right, then 'Settings', scroll down to 'WiFi Calling'.  I believe Samsung customisations sometimes lead to such differences - BICBW.
