Re: Imminent end of landline

Just by way of a quick update, I've today placed an order for FTTP Broadband and digital voice with Zen Internet, after ringing them and talking through the options for myself and my mum.

While I was on the phone with them placing the order, the emails to Plusnet were sent and received. My PN contract doesn't end untl 10 May, so there would be an early termination charge from PN before that date. But Zen have arranged for the City Fibre engineer visit to be on 11 May, so hopefully no extra fees will be payable.

Will keep you updated on how things go. Many thanks for the support so far!

You pay for broadband in advance, so your final payment to see the contract out was made on the 10th April. If you leave before the 10th of May all that will happen is that there will be a small reduction in the refund that you are due for the days between when you leave and the contract end date. The Plusnet service does not end on the contract end date, it continues at the more expensive out of contract rate until the change over is complete, which is often not on the promised date due to problems or resource limitations

Note that you will receive another bill for a full month at the out of contract rate. This will be refunded as appropriate when your Plusnet account is closed.

Thanks @Baldrick1 . It's really helpful to know what the next steps will be in that respect.

Thanks for that update.  Zen seem to be on the ball, and hopefully your changeover is trouble free.

Zen do look to be the best package for me at the moment.  Their home phone (voip) product is £7.50 but that includes 1000 minutes which will be plenty for my uses.  EE only seem to do 2 options, PAYG which is something like £2 an hour with set up charges, or all in for £18.

Re: Imminent end of landline

If you go DIY Voip, then Andrews and Arnold are £1.80/month £12 one off joining fee and 2.4p min charge/1.5p a minute thereafter ( roughly)

Voipfone are £6/month for 100 minutes included, £9 300 mins, £14 unlimited

An analogue telephone adaptor to us with the above costs roughly £42-£70 most of which can be powered via  te USB port on a router

Re: Imminent end of landline

Plusnet sent me a reminder and details about a switch-over to EE, and retaining the landline. Near the end of the details is the comment "As you’re switching your service to EE, you’ll lose your Plusnet email address." I'm not sure how inconvenient the various options for fibre etc. are, but changing email address is probably the worst for me anyway.

I asked about this and was told that if you have migrated to Greenby (I have) you retain your email address. So hopefully this is good news for a change. Sorry if this was blindingly obvious to most.

So will Plusnet exist after giving broadband to EE and email to Greenby?

Re: Imminent end of landline

I had my switch to Zen today. The City fibre installers were efficient, asked me where I wanted the box to go, and all done within the hour. They set up the router so it worked for internet.

I also asked them about connecting digital phone, and they didn't cable that up right - they put the cable from the FON port on the back of the router to an input on the box on the wall. Having looked up various bits and pieces on the Zen website, I removed that connection, and used the connector in the Fritzbox box to make the old cable from my phone connect up to the FON port. It all worked immediately.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Will see how things work out with the PN billing now.

Re: Imminent end of landline

Further update for anyone interested in the switch process to Zen: yesterday evening I received what was a line test call from Zen. My phone rang with single rings, not double rings like you usually get. On being answered, there was a recorded message saying it was a line test call, with an intermittent tone (a bit like the engaged tone). If memory serves right, it was a Rochdale exchange number which rang.

I also got an email yesterday evening from Zen confirming that the fibre service was active. Then another email today, confirming that the Digital voice service was up and running. (Although in reality, it all worked immediately). Can't fault their communications so far.

Yes, they're based in Rochdale.

Been with them nearly three years. No faults, but a couple of queries were handled exceptionally well.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine

Re: Imminent end of landline

All is still going well, touch wood. Incoming 'landline' calls only have a single ring rather than the usual double ring, which takes a bit of getting used to but is not a problem.

Plusnet have sent a text to say the final bill should be available online 20 days after leaving. Must diarise that date (end of the month).

I've also been asked if I would kindly return the router (free return postage). I have a v2 hub, which I still have the box for and will be no problem to return.

I also have an older v1 hub. Do you think they'd want that one back too?

You could return the Hub1, too, using the same facility.

Re: Imminent end of landline

As for UK style ringing ( Ring, ring, pause, Ring ring )

most Voip solutions should have a setting to change this to UK style, a google search shows this should work if the firebox is set to to System > Region and Language (or System > Regional Settings).

other devices look for ring cadence of  400,200,400,2000

Grandstream ring cadence : c=400/200-400/2000;

other settings for UK style ring : 0.4s on, 0.2s off, 0.4s on, 2.0s off
