0845 included, why not 0843

Curious why when I call 0845 numbers they are included yet 0843 which I thought was the same thing are charged as calls.
Why the discrepancy?

Because 0843 has a multitude of call rates http://www.bt.co.uk/pricing/current/Call_Charges_boo/2-1632_d0e5.htm as does 0844 whereas 0845 is classed as local and only has one rate

Re: 0845 included, why not 0843

These codes are tricky to keep up with. You really need to be wary of the companies that give out non 01, 02, 03 etc nunbers that are actually 10p a minute or more.
There is a site 'saynoto0870' that does have standard numbers as an alternative to expensive other numbers.
Let's be careful out there !

Re: 0845 included, why not 0843

Back in the day, 0845 was the same charge as 0844, then BT decided to say that it had to be either cheap or free to call, and so it became, but low and behold, the people using the 084x numbers to profit on scrapped all their 0845 numbers and moved to 0844, 0843 or 0345 to continue making money off being called.... Roll_eyes
I'll second the saynoto0870 site though, the only time it's not worked was calling citylink (not a problem now) and the DWP (still a problem, but I rarely need to call them so not much of an issue for me anyway)... Smiley

0345 are standard charge and included in the free calls package - that is why they are one of the two support numbers for Plusnet as they are part of the included minutes on mobiles

Re: 0845 included, why not 0843

When checking out a new company I need to use if they don't have either a geographic, 0845, 0870 or 03 number then they don't get my business.
There have been some companies that have switched to 0844 or 0871 numbers since I started using them and then I use saynoto0870 for alternatives. If contracted then when that contract is over I move my custom elsewhere.
Usually I see most companies use 0845, 0870 or 03 to draw customers in then force them to use 0844, etc for customer services. I see some companies like Sky use 0844 in their TV advertising. Then again I wouldn't use Sky anyway Wink

Re: 0845 included, why not 0843

Good afternoon, I think the bright sparks have beaten me to this question. Thank you all for the input :), I do not have anything to add to this. Only if you are directed to use one of the numbers we do not cover go to saynoto0870. It has saved me a few pounds in the past.
