Quote from: Blim In say bf3, a lot of my actions just dont register at all and when they do it seem at a big delay. Im having the sort of lag that will alow a player with half health to take a whole flip in the back without taking any damage thebn turn around and kill me for exp.
That sounds far more like lag compensation, than latency. Have a look at some of the videos Chris linked.

videos?
With the tank I can shoot a person and do no damage, explain that. I shoot a helicopter in the sky with the tank, I see the shell hit and yet do no damage. thats not lag comp.
why do I keep seeing time-out in my trace root too?

I used to get 8ms with bt and 6ms with wightcable but heavy spikes in daytime. wc are now running new servers and are rolling out fiber of upto 100mb soon. there none managed upto 12mb service is under £11 a month and if what your saying was correct then what am I paying £30 a month for?

In January I moved from Sussex to Dorset. My average latency has gone up by 2 or 3 ms - nothing else has changed (both exchanges 20CN, in both cases full 8192 sync, interleaving off).

That doesn't just apply to pinging the BBC.
Quote from: jelv One of the biggest factors affecting pings to somewhere like BBC is the distance between your exchange and London where all Plusnet users connect to the internet.........

I suspect a 3.2km difference will be a lot less than the distance you are from London!

Because what you see doesn't represent what is actually occurring on the server at the time. Obviously this could be latency driven, i.e your line is updating slower than the server, so the helicopter has moved on, but with lag compensation running, the server is attempting to balance the ultra 8ms line with your opponents 140ms interleaved line. You may have seen the helicopter move into your sights, but the guy flying it hasn't moved over the tree line yet. The server works out the place to put the helicopter, and that ISN'T where you thought it was.
Lots of complaints about how this works out on the internet.

Data rate(Kbps) 11448 1212
Noise Margin 6 6
Output power(dBm) 12 20
Attenuation(dB) 29 16
Estimated line speed:Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).Current line speed: 9.2 Mb
Still a bit low on the profile side
BF3 is the worst game for hit detection, Some nights I get 3 SMAWS into a tank and no hit detection at all, my mate even watches them hit the tank and no damage is recorded. The same nights I get lagg, micro stuttering, it is as though someone has altered all my GFX settings and changed my mouse speed. Other nights I can't miss, I just point my gun at an enemy running round a corner he disappears I fire and I get a head shot on him. Get in the mobile AA and I am downing jets and helis left right and center, other nights I get no hit detection in the mobile AA and down no jets or helis.
The only other game I play is ARMA 2 and that is laggy by default so I can't compare, but BF3 needs to be slung in the bin because of the crappy hit detection.

Don't get it.
The actual DSL 'signal' travels down the copper wire at (roughly) the speed of light so the odd km here or there will not make a difference over these short differences (as long as interleaving status is the same). There's much more difference over longer distances (in the central internet) because the digital information has to travel through many more nodes, each one will add some latency, to some extent the more hops on a traceroute the higher the latency is likely to be. Transatlantic links are long enough for latency to be noticable due to sheer distance but if you have a ping of, say 13ms to the point where it goes transatlantic and someone slese has 8ms then there should only ever be a 5ms difference to the USA server (assuming the same transatlantic route), this then becomes insignificant compared with the overall latency in connecting to a USA server.
At any given moment in the universe many things happen. Coincidence is a matter of how close these events are in space, time and relationship.

this shows my latency isn't changing hardly at all and the 13ms is between my modem and london. only my isp or bt can say anything about the internal infrastructure, hency is why Im asking them if its posible to get any better while im with pn or on the bt network. I have personly seen it better on a bt connection and I know wc share the same fiber link (not the same network) and that used to go as low as 6ms to bbci.

Also when my mate comes around and plugs in his ps3 it gives my no spikes but can dissconnect me from a game or just make it very very lagy but with a good ping.
This is one of the reasons why I am looking to move on.
just found some old stats. look at ons and instagib all time stats.

after alot of ppl got banned for botting my instagib ranks put me in first place along with ons.
also here is how to fix the lag comp in bf3
