Re: Slow broadband

2 problems with the cat8 theory. This is similar or the same as the problem I had when I joined plusnet, before I was using the cat8 cables. Also, the open reach engineer yesterday replaced it with Cat5 cable, no help. Although there are probably a few other cat8 cables plugged into the router. If I'm going to go plumbing around my end I guess I will start by unplugging all cables. If I do that, will it help to power down the router and/or ont box each time? (It will just be a pain but obviously I can). Also, there is no button to add files. I assume that's because I'm on a phone this end? I will try from a laptop later. Tyvm for all the help and ideas!

Re: Slow broadband

@Michael16 Can't really comment on the cables issue as it is slightly out of my skill-set, but to add files on a mobile device, you need to request the desktop site.

Re: Slow broadband

@Michael16

before you go into wholesale cable swapping, as @PhilipHeyes said , check the WAN link speed shown on the router status

login to the Hub/Router and check the WAN speed and the LAN speed.
if you computer is network connected check the link speed shown again is it 10/100/1000 ?

It should always show 1000, if it doesn't then that is the problem.

It may be down to a cable fault but it could also be a connector fault on the router, we've seen one or two instances of this in the past

Does your router serial no start with 'R' ?

Re: Slow broadband

@Michael16

Cat8 cable is very stiff, are you putting any strain on any of the Routers, LAN/WAN ports.

With the Hub Two the event log does detail port disconnections.

If you look at the event log at the exact time a device connects to the Hub you will see the connection speed, the event looks like this

hh:mm:ss, DD MMM. Wire Lan Port 3 up, Speed 1000 Mbps <- this message is the port detecting a connection and negotiated speed

hh:mm:ss, DD MMM. A device connected to Ethernet port 3 <- this message confirms the connection.

For 100 Mbps it would be

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. Wire Lan Port 3 up, Speed 100 Mbps

These messages are not categorised so no filter can be applied to find them, these messages clear after a while so a search on the event log may not find them.

A port down message

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. Wire Lan Port 3 down, Speed 10 Mbps <- 10 Mbps is reported as speed negotiating starts at 10 Mbps.

Port can be 1, 2, or 3

disconnecting a LAN cable

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. A device disconnected from Ethernet port 1

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. Wire Lan Port 1 down, Speed 10 Mbps

Re: Slow broadband

Can't see anything on the post 'Status' page, but your  'compared speeds' one looks a little strange - 630 on a wired(?) laptop vs 84 on the phone - suggests that the phone is on the 2.4Ghz band.

Maybe @Dan_the_Van  or @MisterW  would care to comment?

Re: Slow broadband

@Michael16

Assuming you are you using a Hub Two you can check which band (2.4 or 5GHz) your devices are connecting.

Look at the Hubs >Home ->My devices screen, this details which band.

Looking at the attached photo it suggests the phone is connected to 2.4 Ghz band and the laptop is 5 Ghz?

Re: Slow broadband

If that 630Mb is wireless then TBH  that's pretty good for a Hub 2. Given that it's only WiFi 5 I would have expected closer to 450Mb!

Re: Slow broadband

So I tried the phone and the laptop both directly plugged into the router. But they have to go through a usb-c adapter. Same poor sub100 speeds. I plugged the laptop into a docking station running straight from the router, 800 something MBs. So it looks like the USB c adapter loses a lot? (It's still a USB c cable going from the docking station to the laptop...) That suggests problem hopefully fixed, it's a wifi issue which I can fix by getting my router and EAPs running. But I'm not sure about the LAN connections, hard to tell because my employer messes up so much with updates and firewalls etc and that docking station is, now that I think about it, the closest thing to getting a laptop connected directly to the router.
